What Existed Before the First Human

Before history had a date. Before the first footstep touched the earth. Before the sun rose on a human face. What was there? This is the story of everything that came before — told twice, in two books, and read side by side.

How to read this page

Most epochs below are presented twice, side by side. The left panel is the scientific reconstruction — dated, measurable, revisable. The right panel gathers the scriptural material: Qur'anic verses, prophetic Hadith with collection references and grading, and Biblical passages (King James Version). Beneath each pair, a short synthesis notes where the two genuinely converge, where they address different questions, and where the correspondence has been overstated.

Every claim carries a visible evidence tier. A verse of the Qur'an and a story from later devotional literature are not the same kind of thing, and this page never lets them look the same. Where a widely repeated claim does not survive its own chain of transmission, it is said so plainly rather than quietly dropped. Scripture is not a physics textbook, and this page does not treat it as one.

✦ ✦ ✦
PART ONE

Before Time

The Eternal and the Unmeasured — the one question science cannot date, and scripture answers without hesitation.

CHAPTER I

Allah — Before All Creation

الله — قبل كل شيء
t < 0 · outside physics, outside history

Before there was a "before" — before time existed, before space had dimension, before a single atom had been called into being — there was only Allah.

He has no beginning and no end. He was not contained by anything, for nothing else existed. He did not reside in a place, for no place had been made. He simply was — and always has been — Al-Awwal (The First) and Al-Akhir (The Last), Al-Zahir (The Manifest) and Al-Batin (The Hidden).

What science describes

General relativity breaks down at the first instant. Asking what came "before" the Big Bang may be a malformed question if time itself began there — like asking what lies north of the North Pole. Physics offers candidate frameworks, none confirmed:

  • Quantum cosmology — the universe as a quantum event with no classical prior state (the Hartle–Hawking no-boundary proposal, 1983).
  • Eternal inflation — our cosmos as one bubble in an endlessly inflating substrate (Guth, Linde, Vilenkin).
  • Cyclic and bouncing models — a rebound rather than a single origin (Steinhardt–Turok; loop quantum cosmology).

Each is mathematically serious and observationally out of reach. Science's honest position here is agnosticism: the equations run out before the question does.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

هُوَ الْأَوَّلُ وَالْآخِرُ وَالظَّاهِرُ وَالْبَاطِنُ

"He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden; and He has full knowledge of all things."

Surah al-Hadid 57:3
Qur'anTier 1

"Originator (Badīʿ) of the heavens and the earth."

Surah al-Anʿam 6:101 — origination without precedent or template
Qur'anTier 1

"He is not asked about what He does, but they will be asked."

Surah al-Anbiya 21:23
HadithTier 2

"There was Allah, and there was nothing before Him; and His Throne was upon the water. Then He wrote all things in the Reminder, and created the heavens and the earth."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3191 · Kitab Bad' al-Khalq · ʿImran ibn Husayn RA
HadithTier 3

"He was in ʿamāʾ — with no air above Him and no air below Him. Then He created His Throne upon the water."

Sunan al-Tirmidhi 3109 (hasan) · Sunan Ibn Majah 182 · Abu Razin al-ʿUqayli RA
BibleTier 3

"Before the mountains were brought forth… from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God."

Psalm 90:2 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God."

John 1:1 (KJV)

ʿAmāʾ — a word that defies simple translation. The classical lexicographers and commentators describe it as a sublime, imperceptible state of existence beyond any human frame of reference. Not darkness. Not void. Not nothingness. Something belonging entirely to Allah, before categories and conditions were invented.

He had no need to create. The decision to bring the universe into existence was an act of pure, absolute, uncaused will. Nothing compelled Him. Nothing preceded His decision. Nothing advised Him.

Reading them together: This is the cleanest example on the page of the two accounts asking different questions. Physics asks what the initial conditions were, and finds its own tools failing at the boundary. Scripture does not supply initial conditions; it asserts an eternal, uncaused Reality that is not itself an item within the universe. Al-Ghazālī's argument in the Tahāfut al-Falāsifah — that whatever begins to exist requires a cause — was formulated centuries before cosmology found a beginning to date, and it neither depends on nor is confirmed by that finding.

CHAPTER II

The Pen & The Preserved Tablet

القلم واللوح المحفوظ
Fifty thousand years before the heavens and the earth

The first thing Allah created was not the sun. Not the earth. Not the angels. Not the heavens. The first act of creation was the act of writing.

HadithTier 3

"The first thing Allah created was the Pen. He said to it: Write. It asked: My Lord, what shall I write? He said: Write the decree of all things until the Hour comes."

Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2155 & 3319 (hasan sahih) · Sunan Abi Dawud 4700 · ʿUbadah ibn al-Samit RA · graded sahih by al-Albani
HadithTier 2

"Allah decreed the measures of creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and His Throne was upon the water."

Sahih Muslim 2653 · ʿAbdullah ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿAs RA
Qur'anTier 1

ن ۚ وَالْقَلَمِ وَمَا يَسْطُرُونَ

"Nun. By the Pen and what they inscribe."

Surah al-Qalam 68:1 — the Qur'an opens this surah by swearing an oath upon the Pen itself

The Pen wrote upon al-Lawh al-Mahfuz — the Preserved Tablet. Everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen until the Day of Judgement was inscribed in that single primordial act. Fifty thousand years before the heavens and the earth existed.

The significance is worth pausing on. The first thing brought into existence was not matter, not energy, not space — but knowledge recorded. Decree. Order. Before a single particle existed, the universe was already written. Every death, every birth, every grain of sand, every heartbeat — already documented.

Qur'anTier 1

"And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it."

Surah al-Anʿam 6:59
SCHOLARLY NOTE — ON THE ORDER OF FIRST THINGS

Ibn Kathir writes in al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah (Vol. 1) that the Pen is the first of created things and inscribed upon the Preserved Tablet all that was to be until the Resurrection — the basis of the Islamic theology of qadar, one of the six pillars of faith. There is a genuine classical disagreement here, however: Bukhari 3191 places the Throne upon the water before the writing, while the Pen hadith places the Pen first. Ibn Hajar (Fath al-Bari) and Ibn Taymiyyah both address this, the dominant reconciliation being that the Throne and water preceded the Pen, and the Pen was the first thing created of this created order — or that "first" is relative to the class of thing under discussion. The disagreement is real and is left open here rather than resolved.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER III

The Throne, Water & The Seven Heavens

العرش والكرسي والسموات السبع
Before the earth had form

After the Pen had written what was decreed, there is al-ʿArsh — the Throne. The most magnificent of all created things. A structure so vast that the seven heavens and the earth, set beside it, are like a ring tossed into a desert.

Qur'anTier 1

"And it is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days — and His Throne was upon the water — that He might test you as to which of you is best in deed."

Surah Hud 11:7

The Throne rested upon water. Before the earth was formed, before any atmosphere existed, before any planet had condensed. The scholars note this is the same water named in the Pen and Throne narrations: the Throne was created, then placed upon the water, and the Pen had already written all things.

Qur'anTier 1

"His Kursiy extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:255 — Ayat al-Kursi

The distinction between the ʿArsh and the Kursiy is profound. Ibn ʿAbbas RA said: "The Kursiy is the place of the two Feet, and no one can estimate the greatness of the Throne." The Kursiy alone encompasses all the heavens and the earth. The ʿArsh is greater still.

Qur'anTier 1

"Then He directed Himself toward the heaven while it was smoke (dukhān), and said to it and to the earth: Come willingly or by compulsion. They said: We have come willingly. And He completed them as seven heavens within two days."

Surah Fussilat 41:11–12

The heavens were once a single smoke — an unformed mass — before they were separated and ordered into seven layered heavens. Each heaven is distinct, inhabited, administered by angels, separated by distances that defeat imagination.

HANDLE WITH CARE

On reading dukhān as a cosmological claim. Modern cosmology does describe an early plasma and then a gaseous state before structure formed, and the resemblance to "smoke" is often presented as prophecy. It should be held lightly. The classical exegetes — al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī, Ibn Kathīr — read dukhān as vapour rising from the primordial water, an image drawn from the world their audience knew, not from an unavailable physics. The modern reading is legitimate as a reading. It is not a prediction, because it was arrived at only after the science was known, which is a weaker kind of claim. This page returns to the point in Chapter VII.

CHAPTER IV

The Angels — Created from Light

الملائكة — خُلقوا من النور
Before the earth, before the jinn, before the first cell
HadithTier 2

"The angels were created from light, the jinn were created from a smokeless flame of fire, and Adam was created from what has been described to you."

Sahih Muslim 2996 · ʿA'ishah RA — three orders of creature, three materials

Before humanity, before the earth, before the dinosaurs, before the first single-celled organism — the angels existed. Created from pure light, they are beings of absolute obedience, incapable of disobeying, constantly engaged in worship and in the execution of commands.

Qur'anTier 1

"Praise be to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, who made the angels messengers with wings — two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent."

Surah Fatir 35:1
Qur'anTier 1

"They do not disobey Allah in what He commands them, but do what they are commanded."

Surah at-Tahrim 66:6
Jibril AS

The greatest of the angels. Charged with carrying revelation to every prophet. Described as having six hundred wings, each filling the horizon. The Prophet ﷺ saw him twice in his true form. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3232, 4856–4857)

Israfil AS

Holds the Trumpet (al-Sur), awaiting the command to blow — the first blast ends all creation, the second raises it. Reports describe him as having held the trumpet to his lips since he was created, his eyes fixed on the Throne. (Sunan al-Tirmidhi 2431, hasan)

Mikail AS

Responsible for rain and provision. Under his command: every drop of water that falls, every seed that sprouts, every river that reaches the sea. Named alongside Jibril in Qur'an 2:98.

The Angel of Death

Takes every soul at its appointed moment — from the greatest king to the smallest insect. Named in the Qur'an only as malak al-mawt (32:11). note The proper name "ʿIzrāʾīl" is widespread in devotional literature but appears in no Qur'anic verse and no authenticated hadith; it enters through isrāʾīliyyāt. The office is certain; the name is not.

Malik

Guardian of Jahannam. "They will call: O Malik, let your Lord put an end to us. He will say: Indeed, you will remain." (Qur'an 43:77)

Ridwan

Named in tradition as the guardian of Jannah. note As with ʿIzrāʾīl, the name is from later literature rather than the Qur'an or the authenticated Sunnah; the Qur'an speaks of the keepers of Paradise (39:73) without naming them.

Hamalat al-ʿArsh

The bearers of the Throne — eight on the Day of Judgement (Qur'an 69:17). Reports describe the distance between one's earlobe and shoulder as a journey of seven hundred years. (Sunan Abi Dawud 4727, on the scale of a single bearer)

Al-Bayt al-Maʿmur

Not an angel but their assembly: the Frequented House in the seventh heaven, which seventy thousand angels enter each day, never to return. Shown to the Prophet ﷺ during the Miʿraj. (Sahih al-Bukhari 3207)

What this establishes for what follows: the angels are the witnesses of the story that has not yet begun. They will be present at the announcement of Adam AS, they will raise the question about bloodshed, and they will prostrate. Every element of Chapter XXI depends on their having been here first, watching.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER V

The Jinn — Created Before Humanity

الجن — خُلقوا قبل بني آدم
Before Adam AS — duration disputed
Qur'anTier 1

وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ السَّمُومِ

"And the jinn We created before, from scorching fire."

Surah al-Hijr 15:27 — the priority is explicit in the text itself
Qur'anTier 1

"And He created the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire."

Surah ar-Rahman 55:15

The jinn possess free will, reason, accountability, and a Day of Judgement. They eat, procreate, and die. Surah al-Jinn (72) is given over entirely to a group of them who heard the Qur'an recited and believed. That the jinn preceded humanity is Tier 1 — it is stated in the Qur'an directly. What is not Tier 1 is everything usually said next about them.

AtharTier 4

"The jinn were on the earth two thousand years before Adam, and they shed blood and killed one another. So Allah sent against them a host of angels who drove them to the islands of the seas."

Attributed to Ibn ʿAbbas RA · al-Ṭabarī, Jamiʿ al-Bayan on 2:30 · Ibn Kathir, Tafsir 1/70–72 — a Companion report, not a prophetic hadith
THE MOST IMPORTANT CAVEAT ON THIS PAGE

On the pre-Adamic reports. These narrations are āthār — statements of Companions and Successors recorded in the tafsir literature — not marfūʿ hadith traced to the Prophet ﷺ. Several show the influence of earlier Near Eastern material (isrāʾīliyyāt), and the figure of "two thousand years" varies across the reports. They are widely transmitted and widely cited, and they are genuinely useful for understanding how the classical tradition read Qur'an 2:30. But they carry markedly less authority than the Qur'an or a Sahih hadith, and scholars have long differed over how much weight to give them.

Some contemporary writers extend these reports further, reading the angels' knowledge as drawn from watching pre-Adamic hominins fill the earth with violence. That extension is a modern proposal, not a classical position, and it is offered on this page as one reading among several rather than as established interpretation.

Even so, the reports answer a real question, and answer it coherently: why did the angels say what they said when the creation of Adam AS was announced? On this reading they had witnessed the previous inhabitants of the earth spread corruption and shed blood. They were not objecting. They were asking, in reverence, with evidence in front of them: will this new creation be different?

Qur'anTier 1

"And when your Lord said to the angels: Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority. They said: Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You? He said: Indeed, I know that which you do not know."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:30 — the exchange returns in full in Chapter XXI
✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER VI

Iblis — Pride Before the Fall

إبليس — أول المعصية
At the command to prostrate

Among the jinn was one who had raised himself, through long worship, to a station among the angels. He worshipped with them and stood alongside them. He was not an angel. He was a jinn who had earned proximity to the divine court through sheer dedication.

Qur'anTier 1

"And when We said to the angels: Prostrate to Adam — they prostrated, except Iblis. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord."

Surah al-Kahf 18:50 — the single verse that settles his species

This verse matters more than it is usually given credit for. It is the reason Iblis could disobey: angels do not possess the capacity, jinn do. His disobedience is not a flaw in the angelic order. It is the exercise of a will that was always his.

Qur'anTier 1

قَالَ أَنَا خَيْرٌ مِّنْهُ خَلَقْتَنِي مِن نَّارٍ وَخَلَقْتَهُ مِن طِينٍ

"He said: I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:12 · Surah Sad 38:76

The scholars identify this moment as the origin of kibr — arrogance. Not disbelief first. Not disobedience first. Pride first. The first sin ever committed in creation was not a physical act; it was a comparison. "I am better than him." Iblis measured himself against Adam AS by material composition — fire over clay — and let the comparison override a direct command. He chose his own analogical reasoning over an explicit instruction, and in doing so ignored the one thing that mattered: what had been breathed into the clay.

Qur'anTier 1

"[Allah] said: Descend from it — for it is not for you to be arrogant therein. So get out; indeed, you are of the debased."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:13

Expelled, Iblis asked for reprieve until the Day of Judgement. It was granted. And he made the declaration that defines every human trial to follow:

Qur'anTier 1

قَالَ فَبِمَا أَغْوَيْتَنِي لَأَقْعُدَنَّ لَهُمْ صِرَاطَكَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ

"Because You have sent me astray (bimā aghwaytanī), surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:16 — Hilali–Khan · see the translation note below
TRANSLATION NOTE — AGHWAYTANĪ, AND WHY THE WORD MATTERS

The verb is aghwaytanī, the causative (form IV) of ghawā — to stray, to be led into error. Published renderings differ, and the difference is not cosmetic:

"You have sent me astray" — Hilali–Khan, Pickthall. "You have led me astray" — Maududi. "You caused me to be misguided" — Ghali. "You have put me in error" — Sahih International. "Thou hast thrown me out of the way" — Yusuf Ali.

The decisive evidence is exegetical rather than lexical. Ibn ʿAbbas RA glossed aghwaytanī as "misguided me" — which is the causative sense, and which the majority of translators followed. This page therefore uses "sent me astray." Sahih International's "put me in error" is defensible but weaker for a form-IV verb, and it was the reading given in the earlier edition of this page. It has been corrected.

Note the theological weight riding on this. Iblis is not confessing a mistake; he is assigning causation to Allah and building a grievance on it. That framing is the whole architecture of his defiance, and a translation that softens the causative loses it.

The Qur'an does not leave this exchange as a fragment. Surah al-Aʿraf carries it in one unbroken sequence from the command to prostrate through to the descent and its consequences for every human being after. It is given here in full, because the passage read whole says something the verses read separately do not.

CONTINUOUS PASSAGETier 1
Surah al-Aʿraf 7:11–28
THE COMMAND · THE REFUSAL · THE RESPITE · THE TREE · THE DESCENT · THE WARNING TO THE CHILDREN OF ADAM  ·  TRANSLATION: HILALI–KHAN
11

And surely, We created you (your father Adam) and then gave you shape (the noble shape of a human being); then We told the angels, "Prostrate yourselves to Adam", and they prostrated themselves, except Iblis (Satan), he refused to be of those who prostrated themselves.

12

(Allah) said: "What prevented you (O Iblis) that you did not prostrate yourself, when I commanded you?" Iblis said: "I am better than him (Adam), You created me from fire, and him You created from clay."

13

(Allah) said: "(O Iblis) get down from this (Paradise), it is not for you to be arrogant here. Get out, for you are of those humiliated and disgraced."

14

(Iblis) said: "Allow me respite till the Day they are raised up (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)."

15

(Allah) said: "You are of those respited."

16

(Iblis) said: "Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path.

17

"Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)."

18

(Allah) said (to Iblis): "Get out from this (Paradise) disgraced and expelled. Whoever of them (mankind) will follow you, then surely I will fill Hell with you all."

19

"And O Adam! Dwell you and your wife in Paradise, and eat thereof as you both wish, but approach not this tree otherwise you both will be of the Zālimūn (unjust and wrong-doers)."

20

Then Shaitān (Satan) whispered suggestions to them both in order to uncover that which was hidden from them of their private parts (before); he said: "Your Lord did not forbid you this tree save that you should become angels or become of the immortals."

21

And he [Shaitān (Satan)] swore by Allah to them both (saying): "Verily, I am one of the sincere well-wishers for you both."

22

So he misled them with deception. Then when they tasted of the tree, that which was hidden from them of their shame (private parts) became manifest to them and they began to cover themselves with the leaves of Paradise (in order to cover their shame). And their Lord called out to them (saying): "Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you: Verily, Shaitān (Satan) is an open enemy unto you?"

23

They said: "Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If You forgive us not, and bestow not upon us Your Mercy, we shall certainly be of the losers."

24

(Allah) said: "Get down, one of you is an enemy to the other [i.e. Adam, Hawwa' (Eve), and Shaitān (Satan)]. On earth will be a dwelling-place for you and an enjoyment for a time."

25

He said: "Therein you shall live, and therein you shall die, and from it you shall be brought out (i.e. resurrected)."

26

O Children of Adam! We have bestowed raiment upon you to cover yourselves (screen your private parts) and as an adornment; and the raiment of righteousness, that is better. Such are among the Ayāt (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations) of Allah, that they may remember.

27

O Children of Adam! Let not Shaitān (Satan) deceive you, as he got your parents [Adam and Hawwa' (Eve)] out of Paradise, stripping them of their raiments, to show them their private parts. Verily, he and Qabīluhu (his soldiers from the jinn or his tribe) see you from where you cannot see them. Verily, We made the Shayātīn (devils) Auliyā' (protectors and helpers) for those who believe not.

28

And when they commit a Fāhishah (evil deed), they say: "We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has commanded it on us." Say: "Nay, Allah never commands Fāhishah. Do you say of Allah what you know not?"

What the passage says that the fragments do not. Three things emerge only when 7:11–28 is read as one movement:

  • The respite is granted before the threat is made. Allah says "You are of those respited" (v.15) before Iblis declares his campaign (v.16). The reprieve is not extracted by the threat; the threat is made from inside a mercy already given.
  • The transgression and the repentance are both dual. Verse 19 addresses "you and your wife"; verse 22 has "them both"; verse 23 is "we have wronged ourselves." There is no singling out of Hawwa AS anywhere in the sequence. See Chapter XXV.
  • The passage does not end with the expulsion. It turns outward at verse 26 and addresses banī Ādam — the reader. The story of the garden is told in order to arrive at "O Children of Adam," which is to say: this is not history you are being given, it is a warning you are inside of. Verse 27 is explicit that the adversary "sees you from where you cannot see him," present tense.
The Biblical parallel
BibleTier 3

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!"

Isaiah 14:12 (KJV) — traditionally read of the adversary's fall through pride; the plain historical referent is the king of Babylon
BibleTier 3

"I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven."

Luke 10:18 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…let all the angels of God worship him."

Hebrews 1:6 (KJV) — angelic homage, though directed to the Son
The theological point

Islam does not hold that Iblis is an equal or opposite force to good. He is not a god of evil, and there is no dualism here. He is a creature — granted free will, who chose arrogance, was given respite, and now tests humanity as one instrument within a decree he does not author and cannot exceed.

The test is itself the wisdom. Would humans choose what Iblis rejected? Would they prostrate when commanded? Note the structure carefully: Iblis's sin is reasoning from substance. He compares materials and concludes a rank. It is a piece of analogy set against an explicit command. Classical scholars treat this as the first instance of kibr, and as a permanent warning about arguments that weigh materials while overlooking the divine act that changed what the material was for.

PART TWO

The Unfolding

Thirteen point eight billion years, from the first instant to a living world — and what scripture says about each stage of it.

A NOTE FOR MUSLIM READERS, BEFORE THE SCIENCE BEGINS

The scientific account does not conflict with Islamic theology at the fundamental level. The Qur'an prescribes no age for the earth or the universe. Its "days" of creation are acknowledged by the classical scholars — Ibn ʿAbbas RA, al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr — as not meaning twenty-four-hour days. The Qur'an repeatedly commands observation of the natural world: "Do they not look at the sky above them, how We constructed it?" (50:6); "Travel through the earth and observe how He began creation" (29:20). Islamic civilisation produced extraordinary scientists in large part because the pursuit of knowledge was itself considered an act of worship.

What follows takes both accounts seriously enough to keep them distinct. Where they meet, that is noted. Where they have been forced to meet, that is noted too.

CHAPTER VII

The Beginning — Space, Time & First Matter

بدء الخلق
13.8 billion years ago · t = 0 to 3 minutes

Everything that exists emerges from a state hotter and denser than any we can reproduce — and immediately begins to expand.

What science describes

Not an explosion into space, but the emergence of space-time itself. The sequence is tightly constrained by particle physics and confirmed by observation:

  • 10−43 s — the Planck time. Before this, no current theory applies.
  • 10−36 s — inflation: the universe expands by a factor of roughly 1026, smoothing and flattening it and setting the seeds of all later structure.
  • 10−6 s — quarks bind into protons and neutrons.
  • 3 minutes — Big Bang nucleosynthesis forges hydrogen, deuterium, helium-3, helium-4 and trace lithium, in ratios we still measure today.

The primary evidence is redshift: light from distant galaxies is stretched in proportion to distance (Hubble, 1929). Space is expanding, and rewinding that expansion converges on a single dense origin. The measured helium abundance — about 24% by mass — matches nucleosynthesis predictions with striking precision.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا أَنَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ كَانَتَا رَتْقًا فَفَتَقْنَاهُمَا

"…the heavens and the earth were a joined entity (ratq), and We separated them (fataqnāhumā)…"

Surah al-Anbiya 21:30
Qur'anTier 1

"And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are [its] expander (mūsiʿūn)."

Surah adh-Dhariyat 51:47
Qur'anTier 1

"When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: Be — and it is."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:117 · Ya-Sin 36:82 — creation by command, not by struggle
BibleTier 3

"In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth."

Genesis 1:1 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…the things which are seen were not made of things which do appear."

Hebrews 11:3 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent."

Isaiah 40:22 (KJV)

Reading them together: Three scriptural themes line up with the cosmological picture in broad shape — an absolute beginning, an early undifferentiated state, and an expanding heaven. Both traditions also reject the idea that the universe is self-explanatory: Hebrews' "not made of things which do appear" and the Qur'anic Badīʿ both point to origination rather than rearrangement of pre-existing stuff.

AN HONEST CAVEAT — AND THE STANDARD THIS PAGE HOLDS ITSELF TO

The concordist reading is popular and it is contested. Taking 21:30, 41:11 and 51:47 as "the Qur'an predicted the Big Bang" does not survive contact with the classical commentaries. Al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī and Ibn Kathīr read ratq/fatq as the heaven withholding rain and the earth withholding vegetation, then both being opened — an agricultural image, not a cosmological one. Mūsiʿūn was widely read as "possessing vast power" or "the one who gives amply." These readings long predate modern cosmology.

The point is not that the modern reading is illegitimate. It is that it is a reading, arrived at after the science was already known — which is a categorically weaker claim than prediction. A verse harmonised with the physics of one generation may need re-harmonising with the next, which makes faith hostage to the current state of a discipline. Hold the correspondences on this page lightly: as invitations to reflection, not as proofs.

CHAPTER VIII

First Light — The Universe Becomes Clear

النور الأول
380,000 years after the beginning

For nearly four hundred thousand years the cosmos is an opaque fog. Then it clears, and light travels free for the first time.

What science describes

Until recombination, free electrons scatter every photon almost immediately — the universe glows but is opaque, like the inside of a cloud. As expansion cools the plasma below roughly 3,000 K, electrons finally bind to nuclei to form neutral atoms. Photons decouple and stream outward unimpeded.

That light is still arriving. Stretched by 13.8 billion years of expansion into microwaves, it is the Cosmic Microwave Background — found accidentally by Penzias and Wilson in 1965, and mapped in fine detail by COBE, WMAP and Planck. Its temperature fluctuations, one part in 100,000, are the seeds of every galaxy that would later form.

Then comes the interval astronomers call the cosmic dark ages: after that first light fades and before the first star ignites, the universe is genuinely dark for a hundred million years or more.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

"[All] praise is due to Allah, who created the heavens and the earth and made the darkness and the light."

Surah al-Anʿam 6:1 — note the order: darkness named first
Qur'anTier 1

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth."

Surah an-Nur 24:35 — the Verse of Light
BibleTier 3

"And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep."

Genesis 1:2 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"And God said, Let there be light: and there was light."

Genesis 1:3 (KJV)
HadithTier 2

"The angels were created from light, the jinn from a smokeless flame of fire, and Adam from what has been described to you."

Sahih Muslim 2996 — light as a created substance, not only a metaphor

Reading them together: Both scriptures place light near the start of creation and before the sun — a sequence that once looked like an error in Genesis (light on day one, sun on day four) but sits comfortably with cosmology, where the universe is bathed in radiation for a hundred million years before the first star ignites.

What scripture is chiefly doing here, though, is theological. Light functions throughout both traditions as the primary metaphor for knowledge, guidance and divine presence. The Verse of Light is a meditation on how God is known. It is not about photon decoupling, and reading it as though it were is to trade something inexhaustible for something small.

CHAPTER IX

Stars & The Forging of the Elements

النجوم وتكوين العناصر
13.4 billion – 4.6 billion years ago

Gravity gathers hydrogen into furnaces. Inside them, every element heavier than helium is manufactured — including the atoms now in your body.

What science describes

Density fluctuations in the primordial gas collapse under gravity. The first stars ignite roughly 100–200 million years in — enormous, short-lived, made purely of hydrogen and helium. Within them, nuclear fusion builds heavier nuclei step by step: hydrogen to helium, then carbon, oxygen, neon, silicon, up to iron.

Iron is the terminus. Fusing it consumes energy rather than releasing it. The core collapses, and the star explodes. In that supernova — and in the collision of neutron stars — the heaviest elements form and are scattered into interstellar space, seeding the next generation of stars and planets.

The consequence: the calcium in your bones, the oxygen you breathe and the iron in your blood were manufactured inside stars that died before the Sun existed. This is not poetry; it is stellar nucleosynthesis, worked out by Burbidge, Burbidge, Fowler and Hoyle in 1957.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

"And We have certainly beautified the nearest heaven with lamps."

Surah al-Mulk 67:5 · cf. as-Saffat 37:6
Qur'anTier 1

"Blessed is He who placed in the sky great stars, and placed therein a burning lamp and a luminous moon."

Surah al-Furqan 25:61
Qur'anTier 1

"The sun and the moon move by precise calculation (ḥusbān)."

Surah ar-Rahman 55:5
Qur'anTier 1

"And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might and benefits for the people."

Surah al-Hadid 57:25 — "sent down" (anzalnā)
BibleTier 3

"He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by their names."

Psalm 147:4 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy."

Job 38:7 (KJV)

Reading them together: Both scriptures treat the stars as ordered and numbered rather than random — a conviction that underwrote centuries of Islamic and Christian astronomy. Al-Battānī, al-Ṭūsī and Ibn al-Shāṭir catalogued and modelled the heavens precisely because they took ḥusbān, "precise calculation," as a description of reality worth measuring. Copernicus's lunar model reproduces Ibn al-Shāṭir's almost exactly — a debt that historians of science, notably Otto Neugebauer and George Saliba, have documented in detail.

HANDLE WITH CARE

On 57:25 and iron. The verb anzalnā ("we sent down") is frequently cited as a reference to iron's extraterrestrial origin in supernovae. But the Qur'an uses the same verb for rain, for scripture, for garments (7:26) and for cattle (39:6) — where the sense is plainly one of divine bestowal rather than physical descent. The astrophysical reading is available; it is not the plain sense, and the verse's own context is about iron's usefulness to human society. Note also that Earth's iron was not "sent down" from space in any straightforward way: it accreted with the rest of the planet and sank to the core.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER X

Earth Takes Shape

تكوين الأرض
4.6 – 4.0 billion years ago

A collapsing cloud becomes a star with a disk of debris; the debris becomes worlds; one of them sits where water can stay liquid.

What science describes

A molecular cloud, likely nudged by a nearby supernova shockwave, collapses and flattens into a spinning protoplanetary disk. The Sun ignites at the centre. Dust grains stick, then accrete into planetesimals, then planets.

  • 4.567 bya — the oldest solids in the Solar System, calcium–aluminium inclusions in meteorites, condense. This is the anchor date for everything else.
  • 4.51 bya — a Mars-sized body (Theia) strikes proto-Earth; the debris forms the Moon, which will stabilise Earth's axial tilt for billions of years.
  • 4.4 bya — the crust solidifies. The oldest known zircon crystals, from the Jack Hills of Western Australia, date from here and carry an oxygen-isotope signature suggesting liquid water was already present.
  • 4.1 – 3.8 bya — the Late Heavy Bombardment, on the traditional reconstruction: a spike of impacts recorded in lunar samples. Its existence as a discrete "spike" is now genuinely disputed, with some workers reading the lunar record as a smooth decline instead.
  • 4.0 bya — oceans condense; plate tectonics begin recycling crust.

Earth sits in the habitable zone — close enough for liquid water, far enough to avoid Venus's runaway greenhouse. Its magnetic field, generated by a molten iron core, deflects the solar wind. Its atmosphere blocks lethal ultraviolet. Mountain roots extend deep into the crust, isostatically balancing the ranges above.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

"And after that He spread the earth (daḥāhā). He extracted from it its water and its pasture, and the mountains He set firmly."

Surah an-Naziʿat 79:30–32
Qur'anTier 1

"Have We not made the earth a resting place, and the mountains as stakes (awtād)?"

Surah an-Naba 78:6–7
Qur'anTier 1

"And We placed within the earth firmly set mountains, lest it should shift with them."

Surah al-Anbiya 21:31
Qur'anTier 1

"And We made the sky a protected ceiling (saqfan maḥfūẓan)."

Surah al-Anbiya 21:32
Qur'anTier 1

"And the heaven He raised and imposed the balance (mīzān)."

Surah ar-Rahman 55:7 · cf. al-Hijr 15:19, "in due balance" (mawzūn)
BibleTier 3

"Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear."

Genesis 1:9 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth?"

Job 38:4 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited."

Isaiah 45:18 (KJV)

Reading them together: The scriptural emphasis here is on calibration — mīzān, balance; mawzūn, in due measure; a world "formed to be inhabited." Modern astrophysics describes the same narrowness in different vocabulary: an orbit in the habitable band, a stabilising Moon, a shielding magnetosphere, a self-regulating carbon–silicate cycle.

Whether that narrowness demands a designer, or is a selection effect — we could only have arisen on a planet that permitted us — is a live philosophical dispute, not a settled scientific result. Both answers are held by serious people. Neither is delivered by the data alone.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XI

The Six Stages — Earth Prepared

خلق الأرض — ستة أيام
Six ayyām · duration unspecified

The Qur'an states in seven places that the heavens and the earth were created in six ayyām (7:54, 10:3, 11:7, 25:59, 32:4, 50:38, 57:4). Beyond that, one widely circulated narration gives an ordered sequence of what was made and when. It is included here in full — and immediately followed by the reason it cannot be leaned on.

ReportTier 5 · defective

"Allah created the soil on Saturday, the mountains on Sunday, the trees on Monday, the things entailing labour on Tuesday, light on Wednesday; He scattered the animals on Thursday, and created Adam AS after ʿAsr on Friday — the last creation, in the last hour of the hours of Friday."

Sahih Muslim 2789 · Abu Hurayrah RA — graded defective by the majority of hadith critics; see below
A CORRECTION THIS PAGE MAKES DELIBERATELY

This narration is very commonly presented as settled Sahih authority. It is not, and saying so is not a modern liberty — it is the classical position.

Al-Bukhari flagged the defect in his al-Tarikh al-Kabir (1/413), holding the words to be those of Kaʿb al-Ahbar — a Jewish convert contemporary with the Companions, known for relating extensively from the Jewish tradition — rather than of the Prophet ﷺ. Yahya ibn Maʿin raised the same objection. Al-Bayhaqi (al-Asmaʾ wa'l-Sifat 2/256) agreed. Ibn Kathir records in his Tafsir (1/123) that this report is among the anomalies of Sahih Muslim and that al-Bukhari and others held it to be the speech of Kaʿb. Ibn Taymiyyah and Ibn al-Qayyim (al-Manar al-Munif, 84–85) concur. Busr ibn Saʿid explained the mechanism plainly: students in Abu Hurayrah's circle sometimes confused what he narrated from Kaʿb with what he narrated from the Prophet ﷺ.

The decisive objection is internal. The narration lists seven days. The Qur'an states six, repeatedly and unambiguously. A report that contradicts a mutawātir Qur'anic statement on the very point it addresses cannot govern that point. A minority — Ibn al-Anbari, Ibn al-Jawzi, and in the modern period al-Albani — defended its authenticity; the majority did not, and this page follows the majority while recording that the disagreement exists.

Why it still appears here: because it shaped the tradition's imagination for a thousand years, and because a page that quietly deleted an inconvenient text would be doing exactly what it criticises. It is shown, graded, and set aside.

What follows, then, is offered as the sequence that Islamic tradition received — theologically rich, historically influential, evidentially Tier 5 — rather than as a chronology to be matched against the rock record.

1
The Earth Itself

The foundational globe — land, rock, and the primordial waters. The stage upon which everything after is placed.

2
The Mountains

"And He has cast into the earth firmly set mountains, lest it shift with you" (16:15). Stabilisers driven deep into the crust like pegs — an image that maps unexpectedly well onto isostasy, though the verse is not making a geophysical claim.

3
The Trees & Plant Life

All vegetation, from the tallest tree to the smallest grass. The oxygen-producing, soil-binding, food-providing foundation of everything that breathes.

4
What Entails Labour — Trial & Difficulty

Hardship, effort, adversity. The classical commentators read al-makrūh here as the burdensome rather than the hated: the counterweight that makes gratitude meaningful and patience an act of worship.

5
Light

"Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth" (24:35). The illumination of existence itself — physical light, and the light of guidance.

6
The Animals — Then Adam AS

All living creatures scattered across the earth. And then, in the last moment of the last stage — after ʿAsr, before sunset — Adam AS. The last of all creation. The crown, and the one that would be tested.

ON THE "SIX DAYS" — WHAT A YAWM ACTUALLY IS

The Arabic yawm and the Hebrew yom both admit "period" as readily as "day." The Qur'an itself uses a day of a thousand years (22:47, 32:5) and a day of fifty thousand years (70:4). 2 Peter 3:8 makes the identical move: "one day is with the Lord as a thousand years." These are not Earth's twenty-four-hour rotations, and the classical scholars did not think they were.

Note also the arithmetic problem in Fussilat 41:9–12: two periods for the earth, four for its provisions, two for the heavens — apparently eight, not six. The classical exegetes resolved this by treating the four as inclusive of the first two. It is a real textual difficulty with a real classical answer, and it is worth knowing that the tradition noticed it long before any critic did.

Whether all of this licenses geological ages, or is a category error imposed on a liturgical text, divides serious scholars in both faiths. See Chapter XXIX.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XII

Water & The First Life

الماء وبدء الحياة
4.0 – 3.5 billion years ago

In water, chemistry crosses a threshold and begins to copy itself. Everything alive descends from that event.

What science describes

Earth's early oceans, hydrothermal vents and possibly tidal pools host a rich prebiotic chemistry. Amino acids, nucleotides and lipids form readily under plausible early conditions — Miller and Urey demonstrated this in 1953, and carbonaceous meteorites such as Murchison carry amino acids ready-made.

The leading model is an RNA world: RNA can both store information and catalyse reactions, which dissolves the chicken-and-egg problem of whether genes or enzymes came first. Lipid membranes spontaneously form vesicles, enclosing the chemistry into proto-cells.

By 3.5 billion years ago, stromatolites — layered mats built by microbial colonies — appear in the rock record at Strelley Pool and North Pole, Western Australia. Contested but older candidates reach back to 3.7 bya (Isua, Greenland) and possibly 4.28 bya (Nuvvuagittuq, Quebec).

All living things trace to a single common ancestor, LUCA — one genetic code, one chirality, one core metabolism. Life on Earth appears to have begun once, and everything since is descent with modification.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ الْمَاءِ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ حَيٍّ ۖ أَفَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ

"…and We made from water every living thing. Then will they not believe?"

Surah al-Anbiya 21:30
Qur'anTier 1

"And it is He who has created from water a human being."

Surah al-Furqan 25:54
Qur'anTier 1

"…and you see the earth barren, but when We send down rain upon it, it quivers and swells and grows every kind of beautiful pair."

Surah al-Hajj 22:5 — life latent in the lifeless
BibleTier 3

"…and He sends down rain from the sky, and We produce thereby pairs of various plants."

Surah Ta-Ha 20:53
BibleTier 3

"…and the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters."

Genesis 1:2 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life."

Genesis 1:20 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed."

Genesis 1:11 (KJV)

Reading them together: This is the closest and least strained convergence on the page, and it deserves to be stated without hedging. Both scriptures make water the medium of life. Genesis has life emerging from the waters and the land rather than being assembled from nothing — "let the waters bring forth," "let the earth bring forth." Modern biology says exactly this: life is aqueous chemistry, and every cell is still mostly water.

The Qur'anic statement is also unqualified and universal — every living thing — which is a stronger and more falsifiable claim than the surrounding cosmologies of its time made, and one that has not been falsified.

✦ ✦ ✦
PART THREE

Deep Time

How 4.54 billion years is divided, what filled each division — and precisely where in that structure this present moment sits.

CHAPTER XIII

The Four Eons — How Time Is Divided

دهور الأرض الأربعة
4.54 billion years ago — to this sentence

Geologists do not measure the past in years alone. They measure it in a nested hierarchy — Eon, then Era, then Period, then Epoch, then Age — each boundary marked by something that actually changed in the rock.

This matters because it answers a question the timeline alone cannot: where are we now? Not approximately. Exactly. The hierarchy below is the current International Chronostratigraphic Chart of the International Commission on Stratigraphy, which is the governing authority for these divisions.

Eon Span What defines it
Hadean 4.54 – 4.03 bya Earth forms and is bombarded. Named for Hades: molten surface, no stable crust at first, no fossil record. The Moon forms. Oceans condense at the end. Named informally in 1972 by Preston Cloud.
Archean 4.03 – 2.5 bya The first crust that survives, and the first life. Prokaryotes, stromatolites, an atmosphere with essentially no free oxygen. Divided into Eoarchean, Palaeoarchean, Mesoarchean and Neoarchean.
Proterozoic 2.5 bya – 538.8 mya Oxygen floods the atmosphere. The eukaryotic cell appears. Multicellularity begins. Two planet-wide glaciations. Ends with the Ediacaran biota — the first large, visibly complex organisms.
Phanerozoic 538.8 mya – today The eon we live in. "Visible life." Everything with shells, skeletons, leaves and eyes. Contains all five recognised mass extinctions and the whole of the fossil record as most people picture it.
A SMALL CORRECTION WORTH MAKING

The Phanerozoic is very widely given as beginning 541 million years ago. That figure is superseded. The ICS refined the base of the Cambrian to 538.8 ± 0.2 Mya. It is a small difference, and it is the difference between citing the current chart and citing a textbook from a decade ago.

Era Span Periods The story
Palaeozoic 538.8 – 251.9 mya Cambrian · Ordovician · Silurian · Devonian · Carboniferous · Permian "Ancient life." The Cambrian Explosion; the first fish, insects, forests, amphibians and reptiles. Land is colonised. Ends in the worst catastrophe in Earth's history.
Mesozoic 251.9 – 66 mya Triassic · Jurassic · Cretaceous "Middle life" — the age of dinosaurs, who hold the land for roughly 165 million years. Birds evolve from theropods. Flowering plants appear. Mammals exist throughout, small and nocturnal. Ends with an asteroid.
Cenozoic 66 mya – today Palaeogene · Neogene · Quaternary The era we live in. "Recent life" — the age of mammals. Grasslands spread, primates diversify, the Himalaya rise, ice ages begin, and one primate lineage starts making tools.
THE FULL ADDRESS OF THE PRESENT MOMENT

Phanerozoic Eon → Cenozoic Era → Quaternary Period (2.58 mya – now) → Holocene Epoch (11,700 years ago – now) → Meghalayan Age (4,200 years ago – now).

That is the complete, current, official answer. The Meghalayan is the youngest formally defined age on the chart; it was ratified in 2018 and begins with a global 200-year drought event recorded in a stalagmite from Mawmluh Cave, Meghalaya, India — a drought that coincides with the collapse of several early civilisations, including the Akkadian Empire and disruptions in the Indus Valley and Old Kingdom Egypt.

THE ANTHROPOCENE — A COMMON ERROR, CORRECTED

We do not live in the Anthropocene. The term is used constantly, including in serious journalism and in a great many books, as though it were an established geological epoch. It is not.

The Anthropocene Working Group, formed in 2009, submitted a formal proposal in October 2023 to define the Anthropocene as an epoch beginning around 1950, anchored to a "golden spike" in the sediments of Crawford Lake, Ontario, marked by plutonium fallout from atmospheric nuclear testing. On 4 March 2024 the Subcommission on Quaternary Stratigraphy rejected the proposal — twelve against, four in favour, two abstentions. The decision was upheld by the International Commission on Stratigraphy on 20 March and ratified by the International Union of Geological Sciences.

The rejection was not a denial of human impact on the planet. The objections were stratigraphic: that a boundary at 1950 is too recent and too thin to function as an epoch-level marker, and that measurable human alteration of the earth extends back millennia rather than decades. Several of the proposal's own critics argue the Anthropocene is better understood as an ongoing event — like the Great Oxidation Event — than as a chronostratigraphic unit. As of the most recent chart update, the Holocene remains the current epoch.

Epoch Span What happened
Palaeocene66 – 56 myaThe emptied world. Mammals radiate into vacated niches. Forests recover. The first primates appear.
Eocene56 – 33.9 myaPeak global warmth; crocodiles in the Arctic. Whales return to the sea. India collides with Asia; the Himalaya begin to rise.
Oligocene33.9 – 23 myaCooling begins. Antarctic ice sheets form. Grasslands spread. Apes diverge from Old World monkeys.
Miocene23 – 5.3 myaGrasslands dominate; grazing mammals diversify. The hominin line splits from the chimpanzee lineage near the end of this epoch.
Pliocene5.3 – 2.58 myaThe Isthmus of Panama closes, rerouting ocean currents. Australopithecus walks upright. Cooling accelerates toward the ice ages.
Pleistocene2.58 mya – 11.7 kyaThe ice ages proper — roughly fifty glacial–interglacial cycles. Homo appears, spreads, and diversifies. Megafauna dominate every continent. Ends with the last deglaciation.
Holocene11.7 kya – todayNow. A remarkably stable warm interval. Agriculture, cities, writing, states, and every recorded civilisation fit inside it. Subdivided into the Greenlandian, Northgrippian and Meghalayan ages.

The proportion worth holding on to. If the 4.54 billion years of Earth's history were compressed into a single calendar year, the Phanerozoic — everything with a visible fossil record — would begin around 19 November. The dinosaurs would die on 26 December. The genus Homo would appear in the last five hours of 31 December. The whole Holocene — agriculture, writing, every empire, every prophet's mission after Adam AS, every event on THE CHRONICLES' main timeline — would occupy the final eighty seconds of the year.

The Qur'an makes a related observation without any of this apparatus: "Has there come upon man a period of time when he was not a thing worth mentioning?" (76:1).

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XIV

From One Cell to Many

من خلية واحدة إلى الكثرة
2.4 billion – 538.8 million years ago

Microbes poison the air with oxygen, then learn to live on it, then learn to live together. Three billion years of the story happen at a scale no eye could see.

What science describes

2.4 bya — The Great Oxidation Event. Cyanobacteria evolve oxygenic photosynthesis. Oxygen, a waste product, first rusts the dissolved iron out of the oceans — laying down the banded iron formations we now mine — then floods the atmosphere. It is the largest pollution catastrophe in Earth's history and lethal to the anaerobes that then ruled the planet. It also builds the ozone layer that will later make dry land survivable.

1.8 bya — The eukaryotic cell. One cell engulfs another and, instead of digesting it, keeps it. The captive becomes the mitochondrion. Aerobic respiration extracts roughly sixteen times more energy per glucose molecule than fermentation, and that energy budget is what makes large, complex cells affordable. Mitochondria still carry their own separate DNA — the fingerprint of a merger that never fully dissolved.

1.2 – 1.0 bya — The first true multicellularity. Bangiomorpha pubescens, a fossil red alga from Arctic Canada, is the earliest known organism with differentiated cell types and sexual reproduction. Cells stop merely sticking together and begin specialising.

The transition required three genuine inventions:

  • Adhesion — cadherins and integrins, molecular velcro that makes cells hold rank.
  • Communication — signalling pathways, so a cell can act on information from its neighbours rather than only from its own surroundings.
  • Programmed death — apoptosis. A cell must be able to die on cue for a body to take shape. Individual survival is subordinated to the whole.

720 – 635 mya — Snowball Earth. The Cryogenian glaciations (Sturtian, then Marinoan) may have carried ice to the equator. The planet comes close to sterilisation. What survives inherits a world.

635 – 538.8 mya — The Ediacaran. The first large, soft-bodied, visibly complex organisms — Dickinsonia, Charnia, Spriggina — appear and then largely vanish. Many have no clear descendants.

Complex multicellularity evolved independently at least six times: in animals, land plants, red algae, brown algae, and twice in fungi. It is a solution the living world reached for repeatedly.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الْأَرْضِ فَانظُرُوا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ

"Say: Travel through the earth and observe how He began creation."

Surah al-ʿAnkabut 29:20 — an instruction to investigate origins in the ground itself
Qur'anTier 1

"What is wrong with you that you do not attribute to Allah due grandeur, while He has created you in stages (aṭwāran)?"

Surah Nuh 71:13–14
Qur'anTier 1

"…and He dispersed throughout it from every creature."

Surah Luqman 31:10
Qur'anTier 1

"Exalted is He who created all pairs — from what the earth grows, and from themselves, and from that which they do not know."

Surah Ya-Sin 36:36 — pairing extended to what was then unknown
BibleTier 3

"Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed… whose seed is in itself."

Genesis 1:11 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…thou sendest forth thy spirit, they are created: and thou renewest the face of the earth."

Psalm 104:30 (KJV)

Reading them together: Qur'an 29:20 is the most methodologically striking verse on this page. It does not assert a mechanism — it issues an instruction: go into the earth and look at how creation started. That is, in effect, a mandate for palaeontology. The classical readings of the verse vary, but on any reading it treats the physical record of beginnings as something a believer is told to examine rather than avoid.

And 36:36's "pairs… from that which they do not know" was, to its first audience, an open category. The sexual reproduction that Bangiomorpha records is exactly the sort of thing that category later came to hold.

WHAT SCRIPTURE DOES NOT DO HERE

Three billion years of microbial and single-celled history have no scriptural narrative at all. No verse describes mitochondria, cell adhesion, banded iron formations or the Ediacaran. Neither book claims to be exhaustive about the other's subject.

The silence is not an omission and it is not an embarrassment. It reflects that these texts address meaning, accountability and relationship with God — not cell biology. A page that tried to find a verse for the mitochondrion would be misreading both.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XV

The Great Diversification

تنوع الخلائق
538.8 – 66 million years ago

Animal life fans out into every mode of movement and every habitat — an explosion of form that both scripture and biology find remarkable.

What science describes
  • 538.8 mya — Cambrian Explosion. Nearly all modern animal phyla appear in the fossil record within about twenty million years. Eyes, shells, jointed limbs and predation arrive together. The Burgess Shale and Chengjiang deposits preserve the soft anatomy.
  • 470 mya — plants colonise land, followed by arthropods. The first soils form.
  • 430 mya — jawed fish diversify; the vertebrate jaw is arguably the single most consequential innovation of the era.
  • 375 mya — lobe-finned fish such as Tiktaalik develop weight-bearing limbs; vertebrates walk.
  • 359 – 299 mya — Carboniferous coal forests. Atmospheric oxygen peaks near 35%, permitting dragonflies with 70 cm wingspans. The coal we burn today is this forest.
  • 310 mya — the amniotic egg frees reptiles from water entirely.
  • 230 mya — dinosaurs radiate; the first true mammals appear as small nocturnal insectivores.
  • 150 mya — Archaeopteryx; feathered dinosaurs take to the air.
  • 130 mya — flowering plants appear and, with pollinating insects, remake every terrestrial ecosystem.

Locomotion diversifies into a small number of recurring solutions: undulation on the belly, bipedal striding, quadrupedal gait, swimming and powered flight — each evolving independently multiple times.

What scripture says
Qur'anTier 1

وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَ كُلَّ دَابَّةٍ مِّن مَّاءٍ

"Allah has created every moving creature from water. Of them are those that move on their bellies, of them are those that walk on two legs, and of them are those that walk on four."

Surah an-Nur 24:45
Qur'anTier 1

"And there is no creature on earth or bird that flies with its wings except that they are communities like you."

Surah al-Anʿam 6:38
Qur'anTier 1

"And there is no creature on earth but that upon Allah is its provision."

Surah Hud 11:6
Qur'anTier 1

"Do they not look at the birds above them, spreading and folding their wings? None holds them up except the Most Merciful."

Surah al-Mulk 67:19
BibleTier 3

"Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth."

Genesis 1:24 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the air, and they shall tell thee."

Job 12:7 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…so is this great and wide sea, wherein are things creeping innumerable, both small and great beasts."

Psalm 104:25 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"O LORD, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all."

Psalm 104:24 (KJV)

Reading them together: Qur'an 24:45 catalogues animal locomotion in precisely the categories a zoologist would use — belly, two legs, four — and grounds all of it in water, which is both the evolutionary origin and the chemical medium of life. Genesis 1:24 likewise has the earth bring forth the living creature, language that a number of Christian theologians from Augustine onward read as mediated rather than instantaneous production.

Both texts also insist that animals are not mere resources. They are "communities like you," and they can teach. That is a moral claim, and it is one neither biology nor geology is equipped to make.

✦ ✦ ✦
PART FOUR

Extinction & Renewal

Five times, most of life is destroyed. Five times, what survives inherits an emptied world — including, eventually, us.

CHAPTER XVI

The Five Great Dyings — In Full

الانقراضات الكبرى الخمسة
445 – 66 million years ago

A mass extinction is not merely a bad century. The technical definition is the loss of more than three quarters of species within a geologically short interval — and by that standard the Phanerozoic contains five, sometimes called the "Big Five" after Raup and Sepkoski's 1982 analysis of the marine fossil record.

What follows gives each one its causes, its victims, its survivors, and — crucially — the length of time the world took to recover. That last figure is the one usually left out, and it is the one that carries the moral weight.

1 Ordovician–Silurian
445 – 443 million years ago · end of the Ordovician Period · two pulses
Marine species lost ~85% Marine genera ~57% Recovery ~5 Myr Rank 2nd worst

Life at this point is almost entirely marine — there is essentially nothing on land to kill. The victims are the great Ordovician reef communities: trilobites, brachiopods, graptolites, conodonts, bryozoans, the early jawless fish.

It arrives in two distinct pulses separated by perhaps a million years, which is why it is sometimes counted as two events. The first pulse comes with the cold; the second with its ending.

CAUSE · Gondwana drifts over the South Pole and glaciates. Sea level falls by 50–100 m, draining the shallow continental shelves where nearly all life lived — habitat destroyed outright. Then the ice melts, sea level rebounds, and anoxic water floods back over the shelves, killing what survived the first pulse. A contributing driver may be the drawdown of atmospheric CO₂ by the first land plants, whose colonisation accelerated silicate weathering. ALT · A gamma-ray burst has been proposed (Melott et al., 2004) but has no direct physical evidence and remains a minority hypothesis.
2 Late Devonian
372 – 359 million years ago · a prolonged crisis, not a single event
Species lost ~75% Marine genera ~35% Recovery ~100 Myr (reefs) Rank slowest

The least sudden of the five, and in some ways the most unsettling: it is less a catastrophe than a protracted failure of the world to keep producing new species. It comprises at least two major pulses — the Kellwasser Event (372 Mya, Frasnian–Famennian boundary) and the Hangenberg Event (359 Mya, at the end of the Devonian).

The great Devonian reef systems — built by stromatoporoids and tabulate corals, the largest reef complexes in Earth's history — collapse and do not return for roughly 100 million years. The armoured placoderm fish are wiped out entirely. The early tetrapods are severely thinned, which nearly ends the vertebrate story on land before it starts.

CAUSE · Widespread ocean anoxia, recorded in black shales worldwide. The leading driver is the spread of deep-rooted vascular land plants: roots break rock into soil, soil washes nutrients into the sea, nutrients trigger algal blooms, blooms decay and strip the water of oxygen. Life on land suffocates life in the sea. Contributing factors: rapid climate swings, CO₂ drawdown, and probable Viluy Traps volcanism in Siberia. NOTE · Bolide impacts (Alamo, Siljan) occur in this window but are not well correlated with the extinction pulses.
3 Permian–Triassic — "The Great Dying"
251.9 million years ago · the worst event in the history of life
Marine species ~96% Land vertebrates ~70% Insect orders ~57% Recovery ~10 Myr Rank 1st

Life came closer to ending here than at any other moment. The figure that should stop the reader is not 96% but the timescale: high-precision uranium–lead dating of ash beds at Meishan, China, constrains the main pulse to less than 61,000 years, and possibly to a few thousand.

It is the only mass extinction that seriously affected insects. The trilobites, which had survived for 270 million years and through two previous mass extinctions, are gone. So are the eurypterids, the rugose and tabulate corals, and the blastoids. On land the synapsids — the lineage that includes our own ancestors — are devastated but not erased.

Recovery took approximately ten million years, an interval so barren that palaeontologists describe the earliest Triassic as a "coal gap" and a "chert gap": for millions of years, the planet produces almost no coal and almost no siliceous sediment, because the organisms that made them are gone.

CAUSE · The Siberian Traps — the largest continental flood-basalt eruption known, covering perhaps 7 million km³ over roughly a million years. The magma intruded through Siberian coal, salt and carbonate deposits, cooking out vast additional volumes of CO₂, methane and halocarbons. The cascade: extreme global warming (+8 to +10 °C ocean temperatures), ocean acidification, ocean anoxia and euxinia (hydrogen-sulphide-rich water), collapse of the ozone layer indicated by malformed fossil pollen, and possible destabilisation of methane clathrates. KEY SOURCES · Burgess, Bowring & Shen, PNAS (2014); Erwin, Extinction: How Life on Earth Nearly Ended (2006); Benton, When Life Nearly Died (2003).
4 Triassic–Jurassic
201.4 million years ago · the door held open for the dinosaurs
Species lost ~76–80% Marine genera ~35% Recovery ~5–10 Myr Beneficiary Dinosauria

The least famous of the five, and the one that most directly determines what the Mesozoic looks like. Dinosaurs had existed for roughly thirty million years already, as one group among many. This event removes their competitors.

The victims are the large crurotarsan archosaurs — phytosaurs, aetosaurs, rauisuchians — that had dominated Triassic land ecosystems and, on many measures, were outcompeting dinosaurs. Conodonts, which had persisted for 300 million years, vanish permanently. Most large amphibians go. In the sea, the ammonoids are nearly wiped out and then re-radiate.

Within a few million years, dinosaurs are unchallenged on land and will remain so for 135 million years.

CAUSE · The Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP) — flood basalts erupting as Pangaea rifted apart, covering more than 10 million km² across what is now eastern North America, north-west Africa, Iberia and Brazil. CO₂ release quadrupled atmospheric concentrations; the result was rapid warming and severe ocean acidification, which is why calcifying organisms suffered disproportionately. DATING · The CAMP eruptions and the extinction horizon have been correlated to within tens of thousands of years (Blackburn et al., Science, 2013).
5 Cretaceous–Palaeogene (K–Pg)
66.043 million years ago · the best-dated catastrophe in Earth's history
Species lost ~75% Non-avian dinosaurs 100% Recovery ~10 Myr Beneficiary Mammalia

An asteroid roughly 10–15 km across strikes the Yucatán Peninsula at approximately 20 km per second, excavating the Chicxulub crater — 180 km wide, still traceable beneath the limestone of Mexico. The energy released is on the order of 1023 joules: some billions of times the Hiroshima yield.

The sequence, reconstructed in unusual detail: an initial thermal pulse as ejecta re-enters the atmosphere globally, raising infrared radiation to oven levels for hours and igniting fires across continents. Then megatsunami across the proto-Gulf. Then sulphate aerosols from vaporised anhydrite bedrock — Chicxulub struck one of the few places on Earth where the target rock was sulphur-rich — blocking sunlight for years. Photosynthesis collapses in the ocean and on land. The food chain fails from the bottom.

The Tanis site in North Dakota preserves, in a single deposit, fish with impact spherules lodged in their gills — a record of the first hour. Analysis of the fish bones indicates the impact occurred in the Northern Hemisphere spring.

Who survived, and why it matters: nothing on land heavier than about 25 kg made it through. Survival correlated with being small, being able to burrow, being able to eat detritus rather than living plants, and being able to breed fast. Every one of those traits describes an early mammal. Birds — the surviving dinosaur lineage — came through as small, beaked, seed-eating ground-dwellers.

CAUSE · Bolide impact, established by the global iridium anomaly (Alvarez, Alvarez, Asaro & Michel, Science, 1980), shocked quartz, tektites, and the crater itself (Hildebrand et al., 1991). CONTRIBUTING · The Deccan Traps in India were erupting through this interval and had already stressed ecosystems; the balance of impact versus volcanism is a live and genuinely unresolved debate, though the 2010 Science review by Schulte et al. — forty-one authors — concluded the impact was the primary driver. NOTE · "Nuclear winter" modelling by Alvarez's successors directly informed Cold War climate-war research; the influence ran both ways.
What scripture says about succession
Qur'anTier 1

"If He wills, He can do away with you and bring forth a new creation."

Surah Ibrahim 14:19 · cf. Fatir 35:16
Qur'anTier 1

وَرَبُّكَ الْغَنِيُّ ذُو الرَّحْمَةِ

Surah al-Anʿam 6:133
Qur'anTier 1

"We have decreed death among you… that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that which you do not know. And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?"

Psalm 104:29 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again."

Ecclesiastes 3:20 (KJV)
The pattern the record shows

Read together, the five events describe a single recurring structure, and it is worth naming because it is not the structure most people expect.

  • Extinction is not selective for excellence. The trilobites were superbly adapted for 270 million years. Adaptation to a stable world is precisely what fails when the world stops being stable.
  • Volcanism, not impact, is the usual killer. Four of the five are associated with large igneous provinces. Only one — the most famous — is an asteroid. The popular picture has this backwards.
  • Carbon is the common mechanism. In almost every case the proximate killers are rapid CO₂ release, warming, ocean acidification and anoxia. The Earth has run this experiment repeatedly.
  • The generalists inherit. Small, unspecialised, flexible, fast-breeding organisms survive. Every mass extinction is a promotion for the unremarkable.
  • Recovery is measured in millions of years. Not thousands. The biosphere does not bounce back on any timescale a civilisation can wait out.

Reading them together: Qur'an 6:133 is striking in this context. Succession is framed explicitly as the replacement of one people by another — "just as He produced you from the descendants of another people" (dhurriyyati qawmin ākharīn). Whatever the verse's primary referent, the structure it describes — one population giving way to a successor — is the structure of the fossil record itself.

Both scriptures also refuse to treat destruction as the end of the story. Extinction is a turning of the page, not the closing of the book. What the geology adds is the price of the page-turn: ten million years, five times over.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XVII

The Lesser Crises & The Sixth Question

الأزمات الأخرى والسؤال السادس
Deep past — and the present

The "Big Five" are a convention, not a natural kind. Extinction is continuous; the five are simply the largest peaks. Below the threshold sit a series of events that were catastrophic in their own right — several of which shaped the world more than the famous ones did.

·The Great Oxidation Event
~2.4 billion years ago · arguably the largest extinction ever

Not counted among the five because it predates the Phanerozoic and left almost no fossils to count. But when cyanobacteria began releasing oxygen, they poisoned a planet whose life was overwhelmingly anaerobic. Whatever fraction of Earth's biota died, it dwarfs anything since in absolute terms. It is sometimes called the Oxygen Catastrophe, and it is the only extinction event caused by life itself — until, possibly, the one now under discussion.

CAUSE · Biological. Photosynthetic waste product. CONSEQUENCE · The Huronian glaciation, possibly the longest ice age in Earth's history, as oxygen destroyed atmospheric methane. And the ozone layer, without which land life is impossible.
·End-Ediacaran
~539 million years ago

The soft-bodied Ediacaran biota — the first large complex organisms — largely disappear at the threshold of the Cambrian. Whether this is a true extinction, a taphonomic artefact, or a case of the Ediacarans being eaten and out-competed by newly evolved predators is genuinely unresolved. The "biotic replacement" hypothesis has been gaining ground.

CAUSE · Disputed. Candidates: anoxia, ecosystem engineering by burrowing animals, predation by the new Cambrian fauna.
·Capitanian (End-Guadalupian)
~259 million years ago

A distinct crisis eight million years before the Great Dying, now argued by several workers to deserve status as a mass extinction in its own right. Marine invertebrate losses were severe; the giant alatoconchid bivalves and the large fusulinid foraminifera were wiped out. It is best understood as the first blow of a one-two punch that ended the Palaeozoic.

CAUSE · Emeishan Traps volcanism in south-west China, plus associated anoxia. SOURCE · Wignall et al., Science (2009); Rampino & Shen (2021) argue for elevating it to the sixth of the Big Five.
·Toarcian Oceanic Anoxic Event
~183 million years ago · Early Jurassic

A sharp marine crisis in the middle of the dinosaurs' reign, driven by the Karoo–Ferrar volcanic province. It illustrates the general rule cleanly: large igneous province → carbon release → warming → anoxia → marine extinction. The mechanism is the same as the Great Dying's, at lower amplitude.

CAUSE · Karoo–Ferrar flood basalts; methane clathrate destabilisation is also implicated by the carbon-isotope excursion.
·Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM)
~55.8 million years ago

Not a mass extinction — but the closest analogue in the geological record to what is happening now, and therefore the most studied. Between 4 and 8 °C of global warming in perhaps 20,000 years, driven by a massive carbon injection. Deep-sea foraminifera suffered severe extinction; on land, mammals dwarfed and migrated, and the modern orders of primates, artiodactyls and perissodactyls appear immediately afterward.

WHY IT MATTERS · The PETM released carbon at roughly 1–2 gigatonnes per year. Current human emissions are approximately ten times that rate. The PETM is the closest thing to a control experiment, and the present experiment is running faster.
·Quaternary Megafauna Extinction
~50,000 – 4,000 years ago · continent by continent

Mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths, woolly rhinoceros, cave bears, the giant short-faced bear, Diprotodon, the moa, the giant lemurs, Megalania. Australia loses roughly 88% of its megafauna genera; the Americas roughly 72%; Eurasia roughly 35%; Africa — where hominins and megafauna co-evolved over millions of years — loses comparatively little.

That last asymmetry is the crux of the argument. The losses track the arrival of humans on each landmass far more closely than they track climate. Australia ~45 kya; the Americas ~13 kya; Madagascar and New Zealand within the last 1,000–2,000 years.

CAUSE · Contested, and honestly so. Three positions: overkill by human hunting (Martin); climate change at the end of the Pleistocene; and a combination in which climate stressed populations that hunting then finished. The African exception is the strongest single argument for a human role. SOURCES · Barnosky et al., Science (2004); Sandom et al., Proc. R. Soc. B (2014).
6?The Holocene Extinction — the open question
Ongoing · status genuinely contested
Vertebrate loss since 1500 ~700+ spp. Threatened (IUCN) ~28% assessed Background rate ×10–100+ Formal status not declared

Many scientists argue that a sixth mass extinction is underway. The case rests on rate rather than total: documented vertebrate extinctions since 1500 CE are far fewer than 75% of species, but they are occurring at somewhere between ten and a hundred times the background rate inferred from the fossil record, and threat assessments imply that the totals could reach mass-extinction magnitude within centuries if current trajectories hold.

The drivers, in rough order of current impact: habitat destruction and land-use change; direct exploitation (fishing, hunting, logging); invasive species; pollution; and climate change, whose share is rising fast. Unlike all five predecessors, the proximate cause is the behaviour of a single species.

The honest counter-argument, which this page will not suppress: some palaeontologists — notably John Alroy and Doug Erwin — caution that comparing modern extinction counts to fossil-record extinction counts is methodologically fraught, that the fossil record cannot resolve events on a century scale, and that we are not yet at mass-extinction magnitude even if we are heading there. Erwin's specific warning is worth quoting in substance: a real mass extinction is not merely a large number of deaths but an ecological collapse from which recovery takes millions of years, and treating the present as already equivalent to the Great Dying risks both bad science and fatalism.

STATUS · Widely argued, not formally declared. The ICS rejection of the Anthropocene (Chapter XIII) is a separate question but reflects a related caution about declaring geological events while standing inside them. Why this section belongs on this page

Because the angels' question in Qur'an 2:30 was not vague. They named two things: fasād, corruption of the earth, and safk al-dimāʾ, the shedding of blood. Chapter XXI returns to the blood. This chapter is the corruption.

And the verdict is not ambiguous. The megafaunal losses that follow human arrival on every continent and island, the deforestation, the current rate of species loss — whatever one concludes about the metaphysics of 2:30, the angels' empirical prediction has an unambiguous answer in the ground.

Note that 30:41 does something unusual for a scriptural text: it assigns causation. Not fate, not decree, not the machinations of an adversary — bimā kasabat aydī al-nās, by what human hands have earned. And its stated purpose is not condemnation but return: laʿallahum yarjiʿūn, that perhaps they will turn back. The last hadith above makes the same point in the most practical possible form: even at the end, plant the tree.

PART FIVE

The Human Line

Seven million years of upright walking, tool-making and growing brains — the epoch where science and theology most sharply require careful handling, and the question those seven million years force.

CHAPTER XVIII

The Hominin Line

سلالة أشباه البشر
7 million – 300,000 years ago
What science describes
  • 7 mya — the hominin line diverges from the chimpanzee lineage. Sahelanthropus tchadensis, Chad.
  • 4.4 mya — Ardipithecus ramidus ("Ardi"): upright but still climbing, with a grasping big toe.
  • 3.2 mya — Australopithecus afarensis. "Lucy." Brain the size of a chimpanzee's; hips and knees unmistakably bipedal. The Laetoli footprints (3.66 mya) preserve a bipedal gait pressed into volcanic ash — three individuals walking together.
  • 3.3 mya — the Lomekwi stone tools, which predate the genus Homo entirely and forced a revision of what "tool-maker" means.
  • 2.6 mya — Oldowan industry; Homo habilis.
  • 1.9 mya — Homo erectus: modern body proportions, long-distance endurance walking, controlled fire, the Acheulean handaxe, and the first hominin to leave Africa. Persists for more than 1.5 million years — a longer run than our species has had by an order of magnitude.
  • 800 kya — Homo antecessor at Atapuerca, Spain.
  • 400 kya — Homo neanderthalensis in Europe and western Asia; Denisovans in the east, known first from a single finger bone and identified by genome alone.
  • 300 kya — anatomically modern Homo sapiens; the earliest fossils at Jebel Irhoud, Morocco (Hublin et al., Nature, 2017), which pushed the origin back by 100,000 years and moved it out of East Africa.
  • Also present: Homo floresiensis (Flores, to ~50 kya) and Homo naledi (South Africa, ~250 kya) — small-brained hominins contemporary with us.

Cranial capacity roughly triples across this span. Genetics confirms interbreeding: most non-African humans today carry 1–2% Neanderthal DNA, and some Oceanic populations carry Denisovan DNA at several percent. On this account, human beings are one surviving twig of a formerly bushy family tree.

BibleTier 3

"And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground."

Genesis 2:7 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."

Genesis 3:19 (KJV)

Reading them together: Both scriptures agree on one substantive claim that biology independently confirms — human beings are made of ordinary terrestrial matter. "Dust of the ground," "clay," "altered black mud": the elemental composition of the human body is the elemental composition of the crust. The hadith of the handful taken from all the earth goes further and ties human variation to the variation of the soil, which is a striking image for a text that predates any theory of population genetics.

The Qur'anic language of aṭwār (stages) and ṭabaqan ʿan ṭabaq is read by some modern scholars as leaving room for developmental process. It is worth being precise about what the classical commentators did with it: they applied it chiefly to embryology — nuṭfah → ʿalaqah → muḍghah → ʿiẓām → laḥm, the sequence of 23:12–14 — and to the stages of an individual human life. Reading it as phylogeny rather than ontogeny is a modern move. That does not make it wrong. It makes it new, and it should be labelled as new.

WHERE THIS GETS GENUINELY CONTESTED

Whether Homo sapiens descends from earlier hominins, and how that squares with the direct creation of Adam AS, is not settled within either faith, and anyone who tells you otherwise is representing a party rather than the field.

Positions range from full rejection of common descent for humans, through acceptance of evolution for the body with a distinct divine act conferring the soul, to the view that Adam AS represents the first morally accountable human within an existing population. Each has textual reasoning behind it and each has real difficulties. All four are laid out with their strengths and their costs in Chapter XXIX.

This page presents the range. It does not adjudicate it, and it would be dishonest of it to pretend the matter is closed in either direction.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XIX

The Threshold of Mind

عتبة العقل
300,000 – 50,000 years ago

Anatomically modern humans exist for a quarter of a million years — and then something changes, and they begin to make art, bury their dead, and speak in symbols.

What science describes

Skeletons indistinguishable from ours appear by 300,000 years ago. But the archaeological signature of a fully modern mind arrives later, and accumulates unevenly:

  • ~300 kya — long-distance transport of pigment and obsidian at Olorgesailie, Kenya. Networks, not just tools.
  • ~100 kya — deliberate burial with grave goods at Qafzeh and Skhul; ochre processing in an abalone-shell toolkit at Blombos Cave, South Africa.
  • ~77–70 kya — engraved cross-hatched ochre and shell-bead ornament at Blombos. The engraving is the earliest known abstract design.
  • ~65 kya — cave paintings at La Pasiega and Maltravieso, Spain, dated by uranium–thorium to before Homo sapiens arrived in Europe — implying Neanderthal authorship. Contested, and important if it holds.
  • ~50–40 kya — the "Upper Palaeolithic transition": figurative cave art (Chauvet, Sulawesi), bone flutes (Hohle Fels), the Lion-Man figurine, standardised blade industries, long-distance trade in shell and amber.
  • ~45 kya — humans cross open water to Sahul (Australia/New Guinea), which requires watercraft and planned voyaging. Later, into the Americas.

The enabling capacities appear to be recursive symbolic language — which lets knowledge accumulate across generations rather than dying with the individual — and large-scale cooperation among unrelated strangers, achieved by no other species. Culture, not anatomy, becomes the dominant mode of human adaptation.

Whether the transition was a sudden cognitive "revolution" or the gradual accumulation of capacities already present is actively debated; the African record increasingly favours gradual.

الرَّحْمَٰنُ ۞ عَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ ۞ خَلَقَ الْإِنسَانَ ۞ عَلَّمَهُ الْبَيَانَ

Genesis 2:19 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…he hath set the world in their heart."

Ecclesiastes 3:11 (KJV) — often rendered "eternity in their hearts"

Reading them together: Both traditions single out naming and speech as the definitively human faculty — the Qur'an's al-bayān and teaching "by the pen," Genesis handing Adam the task of naming the animals. Archaeology arrives at the same place from the opposite direction: what separates the Upper Palaeolithic from everything before it is symbol.

This convergence is conceptual rather than chronological, and it is the more interesting for that. Nobody is claiming a verse dates the Blombos engraving. The claim is smaller and sturdier: two traditions that could not have known the archaeology identified the same faculty as the one that mattered, and the archaeology, arriving much later and by an entirely different route, agrees.

This is also the hinge into Part VI. The test Adam AS passes in Qur'an 2:31 is a test of naming. The faculty scripture makes decisive is the faculty the record makes decisive. Hold that in mind for what follows.

CHAPTER XX

Was There Mankind Before Adam AS?

هل كان بشر قبل آدم عليه السلام؟
The question the fossil record forces

Chapter XVIII laid out seven million years of hominins. Chapter XIX laid out a mind that crosses a threshold. This chapter answers the question those two chapters make unavoidable — and it answers it directly, before qualifying anything.

THE DIRECT ANSWER

No. According to the Qur'an, the authenticated Sunnah, and the agreement of Sunni scholarship, no human being existed before Adam AS. He is abū al-bashar — the father of mankind — and every human who has ever lived descends from him and his wife. This is not a contested position; it is as close to settled as Islamic theology gets, and it rests on explicit Tier 1 and Tier 2 texts rather than on inference.

But three further things are true, and they are what the rest of this chapter is about. First, other conscious creatures did precede him — the jinn, on the Qur'an's own testimony. Second, Islam supplies no date for Adam AS, which changes what the fossil record can and cannot contradict. Third, on what the hominins actually were, the tradition is genuinely open, and anyone presenting one answer as the Islamic answer is overreaching.

Adam AS as father of all mankind
HadithTier 2

"They will come to Adam and say: You are Adam, the father of mankind (abū al-bashar). Allah created you with His own Hand, and breathed into you of His spirit, and commanded the angels and they prostrated before you. Intercede for us with your Lord."

"All of you are the children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust. Let people stop boasting of their forefathers."

Sunan Abi Dawud 5116 · Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 3955 — the descent is universal, and it is levelling
On Qur'an 2:30 — and an honest reading

The word khalīfah in 2:30 is sometimes offered as evidence that Adam AS succeeded a prior human race. That inference does not hold on its own, and it is worth seeing why.

The classical exegetes give the term two main readings, and neither requires prior humans. The first: khalīfah as one whose descendants succeed one another in generations — Adam AS and his progeny relieving each other on the earth. The second: khalīfah as one who exercises authority on behalf of Allah, an office of delegated stewardship, which entails no predecessor at all.

Where succession is read into the verse, the classical tafsir consistently supplies the jinn — not humans — as what was succeeded. Al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī and Ibn Kathīr all record this at length. See Chapter V.

What no classical commentator does is read 2:30 as Adam AS succeeding an earlier human race. That reading is modern, and it is not supported by the term.

Something conscious was here first. On this the Qur'an is explicit and the matter is Tier 1:

Qur'anTier 1

وَالْجَانَّ خَلَقْنَاهُ مِن قَبْلُ مِن نَّارِ السَّمُومِ

"And the jinn We created before, from scorching fire."

Surah al-Hijr 15:27 — priority stated in the text itself, requiring no interpretation; recalled here from Chapter V because the answer to this chapter's question turns on it

Beyond the jinn, the tradition preserves reports of still earlier inhabitants — the Hinn, the Binn, and in some versions the Tamm and Ramm. These are frequently repeated online, and increasingly they are offered as the Islamic explanation for hominin fossils. That offer does not survive examination, and this page will not repeat it uncritically.

ReportTier 5

"Many of the scholars of tafsir say that the jinn were created before Adam, and that before them on the earth were the Hinn and the Binn; then Allah caused the jinn to prevail over them, and they killed them and expelled them from the earth and dwelt in it after them."

Ibn Kathir, al-Bidayah wa'l-Nihayah · Tafsir 1/55 — reporting the view of others, not asserting it
A CORRECTION — THIS IS THE WEAKEST LINK IN THE POPULAR ACCOUNT

The Hinn and Binn are routinely presented as a third viewpoint standing level with the other two. They are not. The material is markedly weaker than anything else in this chapter, and the objection comes from within the tradition, from a major exegete of the modern period.

Muhammad al-Ṭāhir ibn ʿĀshūr (d. 1973), in al-Taḥrīr wa'l-Tanwīr (1/228) — one of the most significant tafsīrs of the twentieth century — states that if the earth is said to have been inhabited by a race called al-Hinn wa'l-Binn, or al-Tamm wa'l-Ramm, "this is a reference to something that never existed and is unknown," and that the material appears to derive from Persian and Greek popular story rather than from revelation. Several comparative scholars have made the same observation, noting the structural resemblance to the Titans displaced by the Olympians.

There is no prophetic hadith of this kind at all. The narrations are statements of some Companions and Successors, bearing the marks of isrāʾīliyyāt, and even the details contradict each other: the reports describe the Hinn as gigantic primordial beings, while al-Jāḥiẓ in Kitāb al-Ḥayawān classes them as a weak type of spirit, and al-Shiblī calls them the dogs of the jinn.

The upshot: using the Hinn and Binn to explain Homo erectus attaches a well-evidenced fossil record to the least-evidenced material in the Islamic corpus. It is offered here so the reader recognises it when they meet it — and knows what it is worth. It is not a position this page ranks alongside the others.

The question is concrete. Sima de los Huesos in Spain holds some 430,000-year-old hominin skulls. Homo heidelbergensis, Homo erectus, the Neanderthals and the Denisovans all walked fully upright, controlled fire, knapped tools, and in the Neanderthals' case buried their dead and possibly painted caves.

They were not chimpanzees, and no Islamic position claims they were. Chimpanzees are a separate living lineage; these are extinct members of the genus Homo or its immediate relatives. So what were they? Four positions are held by serious Muslim scholars. Each is given here with the cost it carries.

A · They were human — early descendants of Adam AS

The hominins were fully human, children of Adam AS, distinct populations that adapted differently and then died out or were absorbed.

The move that makes it work: Islam gives no date for Adam AS. The 6,000-year figure is Archbishop Ussher's 1650 calculation from the Masoretic genealogies — a seventeenth-century Anglican computation, binding on no Muslim (see Chapter XXVII). If Adam AS was placed on earth hundreds of thousands of years ago, the difficulty simply dissolves.

Institutional support: IslamWeb has issued a fatwa stating that Neanderthals may well have been descendants of Adam AS.

Cost: must accommodate hominins whose anatomy and cranial capacity differ substantially from ours, and must place Adam AS at a date far earlier than most of the tradition assumed.

B · They were animals — a pre-Adamic creation without the rūḥ

A separate, extinct, intelligent biological creation. Upright, tool-using, fire-controlling — and still animals, because possessing a human-like skeleton is not the same as possessing a soul or moral accountability (taklīf).

The theological engine: what makes a human being human, in Islam, is not anatomy. It is the rūḥ breathed in at 15:29 and the accountability that comes with it. Humanity begins at that breath, not at a pelvis.

Cost: requires holding that creatures who buried their dead with grave goods, made ornaments and possibly produced art were nonetheless not morally accountable — a line that is philosophically coherent but empirically difficult to locate.

C · Tawaqquf — deliberate non-commitment

Suspension of judgement. The texts do not describe Adam's earliest descendants in enough detail to settle what the fossils are, so the theologian declines to rule.

Its strongest formulation comes from David Solomon Jalajel (Tawaqquf and the Acceptance of Human Evolution, Yaqeen Institute, 2018): biologists, working in their field, have nothing to say about Adam; theologians, working in theirs, have nothing to say about how a species evolved. To do otherwise is for each to transgress the other's domain.

Cost: unsatisfying to anyone who wants a picture. Its defenders reply that wanting a picture is not an argument for having one.

D · They were the Hinn and Binn

The proposal that the hominin fossils are the physical remains of the pre-Adamic creatures the angels watched shedding blood.

Assessment: this is the weakest of the four and is not equivalent to the others. It rests on Tier 5 material that Ibn ʿĀshūr judged baseless and traced to Persian and Greek story, and it appears in no prophetic hadith. See the correction above.

Cost: it explains a well-evidenced record by appeal to the least-evidenced material available, which is the wrong direction for an explanation to run.

Killed? Vanished? Simply outbred? The palaeontology gives a clear answer, and the answer differs depending on which of the positions above is held — but only in what it means, not in what happened.

What the evidence shows

They were not exterminated in war. There is no evidence of systematic conflict between Homo sapiens and Neanderthals. Localised violence over hunting grounds is plausible and probably occurred; a campaign of annihilation is not what the record shows.

Demography did most of the work. A 2021 review in Scientific Reports describes an emerging consensus in palaeoanthropology that demography was the main factor in the Neanderthals' disappearance. Their populations were small, fragmented and inbred; effective population sizes may have been in the low thousands across all of Europe. Modern human populations arriving after roughly 50,000 years ago were larger and better connected. Small isolated populations go extinct from ordinary bad luck — a hard winter, a failed generation — in a way large ones do not.

They were partly absorbed rather than replaced. Interbreeding is now established from ancient DNA. Every living person of non-African descent carries roughly 1–2% Neanderthal DNA; some Oceanic populations carry several percent Denisovan. Some of it is functional — immune-system variants, skin and hair genes, and a haplotype affecting altitude adaptation in Tibetans that came from Denisovans.

Climate stressed them first. The last glacial period drove severe habitat fragmentation across Europe. Several distinct pressures acted together; no single cause suffices.

What that means, on each reading

On position A (they were Adam's descendants): they did not really disappear. They were an early branch of the human family that was demographically absorbed, and a measurable fraction of them is still present — in the genome of nearly everyone reading this. The distinctive skull shapes faded; the lineage did not vanish.

On position B (they were pre-Adamic animals): the question of "after Adam" does not arise, because they were already extinct — or nearly so — before he was placed on the earth. They lived out their span, faced the ice ages, and left fossils, exactly as the mammoth and the cave bear did.

On position C (tawaqquf): the palaeontology is accepted as palaeontology and no theological weight is placed on it either way.

A note worth holding. Position A and the genetics are not in tension on the point people expect. The genetic evidence rules out humanity descending from exactly two individuals within the last few hundred thousand years — it does not rule out a founding pair placed far enough back for the signal to be undetectable. That is a real distinction, and it is where much of the serious contemporary discussion sits.

Shia narrationTier 5 · outside Sunni criteria

"Perhaps you think that Allah did not create a humanity other than you. Rather, by Allah, He created a thousand thousand Adams, and you are at the end of those Adams."

Attributed to Imam Muhammad al-Baqir · al-Shaykh al-Ṣaduq, al-Khiṣal and al-Tawhid · not transmitted through Sunni chains and not accepted in Sunni hadith science; its grading is also discussed within Imami scholarship

It is recorded here for completeness, because the question was asked in general terms and a page that presented only one school's answer would be misrepresenting the field. Within Twelver Shia thought this and related narrations have supported a reading of successive worlds and successive Adams. It carries no authority in the Sunni framework this page otherwise works within, and it is not being smuggled in as though it did. It is a genuinely held position in a genuinely different tradition, and the reader should know it exists.

Settled
Adam AS is the father of all mankind. No human preceded him. Every human descends from him and his wife. Qur'an 4:1, 39:6, 7:189; Bukhari 4712; Muslim 193a. Denying it contradicts explicit text.
Settled
The jinn preceded humanity. Qur'an 15:27 states it directly. What they did before Adam AS is Tier 4 territory; that they were first is Tier 1.
Settled
Humanity is defined by the rūḥ, not by anatomy. The prostration was commanded after the breath, not after the moulding. Qur'an 15:29, 32:9.
Open
When Adam AS was placed on the earth. No Qur'anic verse and no sound hadith gives a date. The tradition assumed recency; the texts never required it.
Open
What the hominins were. Positions A, B and C above are all held by qualified scholars. This is a live question, not a settled one.
Weak
The Hinn and Binn as an explanation for anything. Rejected as baseless by Ibn ʿĀshūr; no prophetic hadith; probable borrowed mythology.

The boundary this chapter has been walking. There is a verse that states the epistemological position better than any argument could, and the Yaqeen Institute's treatment of human origins opens with it:

"I did not call them to witness the creation of the heavens and the earth, nor their own creation." — Qur'an 18:51. Tier 1

The events surrounding Adam AS are ghayb — the unseen. No one was there. No experiment reaches them. That is not a defeat for either discipline; it is a statement about what kind of claim is being made. Science reconstructs what it can observe traces of, and it does so well. Revelation reports what could not be observed at all. The mistake in both directions is to expect one to certify the other.

What this chapter has tried to do is give a clear answer where the texts give one, mark the boundary where they stop, and refuse to fill the gap with material that cannot bear the weight. Everything from here on — the announcement, the clay, the breath, the trust — sits on the far side of that boundary, and is offered as what it is.

✦ ✦ ✦
PART SIX

Adam AS

Here the two accounts part company in kind, not merely in detail. Scripture now describes something science has no instrument to detect: a creature shaped from the ground, given a breath that is not its own, and addressed by its Maker.

CHAPTER XXI

The Announcement of the Khalifah

إعلان خلق آدم عليه السلام
The announcement of the vicegerency

Everything that preceded — the Pen, the Preserved Tablet, the Throne, the seven heavens, the earth's long preparation, the angels, the jinn — all of it was, in a sense, preparation. Not by necessity: Allah needed none of it. But by design, by wisdom, by a plan inscribed before time began, everything was being made ready.

The exchange, in sequence
1 · The announcementTier 1

وَإِذْ قَالَ رَبُّكَ لِلْمَلَائِكَةِ إِنِّي جَاعِلٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ خَلِيفَةً

"And when your Lord said to the angels: Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority (khalīfah)."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:30a
2 · The questionTier 1

أَتَجْعَلُ فِيهَا مَن يُفْسِدُ فِيهَا وَيَسْفِكُ الدِّمَاءَ

"They said: Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You? He said: Indeed, I know that which you do not know."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:30b
3 · The testTier 1

"And He taught Adam the names — all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said: Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:31
4 · The admissionTier 1

"They said: Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:32
5 · The commandTier 1

"And when We said to the angels: Prostrate before Adam — they prostrated, except Iblis. He refused and was arrogant, and became of the disbelievers."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:34
6 · The refusalTier 1

"He said: I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:12 · Sad 38:76 — recalled here to complete the sequence; analysed in Chapter VI
7 · Who he wasTier 1

"…except Iblis. He was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord."

Surah al-Kahf 18:50 — he was never an angel
The bloodshed the angels named

The angels' concern was not vague. They specified two things: fasād, corruption of the earth, and safk al-dimāʾ, the shedding of blood. Both are documented in the human record from its earliest layers.

  • Jebel Sahaba, Sudan (~13,400 years ago) — a cemetery of some sixty individuals, many with projectile injuries and healed wounds from repeated attacks. Re-analysis in 2021 confirmed multiple episodes of violence across lifetimes rather than a single battle. The oldest known evidence of sustained intergroup conflict.
  • Nataruk, Kenya (~10,000 years ago) — twenty-seven individuals killed together, several with bound hands, including pregnant women and children. A massacre among hunter-gatherers, before cities or states existed.
  • Talheim, Germany (~7,000 years ago) — an entire early farming community, thirty-four people, killed with adzes and thrown into a pit.
  • Schöneck-Kilianstädten (~7,000 years ago) — a comparable Neolithic massacre with systematic breaking of the victims' lower legs.

And the corruption is measurable too: the megafaunal extinctions that follow human arrival on every continent and island, from the mammoth and the moa to the thylacine; deforestation; and, in our own century, the rate of species loss set out in Chapter XVII.

Whatever one concludes about the metaphysics, the angels' empirical prediction has an unambiguous verdict in the ground.

Why did the angels say it? This is the question the passage forces, because the angels appear to know something they had not been told. The Qur'an does not answer directly. The exegetical tradition offers four explanations, which are not mutually exclusive:

  • They had seen it before. The most widely transmitted view. Al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī and Ibn Kathīr record reports attributed to Ibn ʿAbbas, Ibn Masʿud and others that the earth was inhabited before Adam AS — by the jinn — who spread corruption and shed blood until an angelic host was sent against them. The angels therefore reasoned by analogy from creatures they had watched fill the earth with violence. (Tier 4 — see Chapter V.)
  • They read it. Some held the angels had seen the matter written in the Preserved Tablet.
  • The word itself told them. A khalīfah is one who arbitrates and settles disputes — which presupposes that there will be disputes to settle. On this reading the inference is contained in the announcement, and requires no prior observation at all. This is the most textually economical answer.
  • They inferred it from the material. Al-Rāzī notes the view that a creature compounded of earth, with appetite and need, will necessarily compete — unlike beings of light, who neither hunger nor inherit.

What the exchange actually establishes. Three things, each of which everything after depends on:

  • The angels were not protesting. The overwhelming majority of commentators read their words as istifhām istikshāf — a request to understand the wisdom, not an objection to the decree. And note what the reply does not do: "I know that which you do not know" never denies their prediction. It concedes the bloodshed and points past it, to the prophets, the truthful, the martyrs and the righteous who would also come from this creature.
  • The test was of knowledge, not of purity. Adam's qualification is not that he is better behaved than the angels — he is not, and the Qur'an will shortly say so. It is that he can be taught the names. Superiority here is the capacity to know, to categorise, to speak. That is precisely the faculty archaeology identifies as the hinge of human history (Chapter XIX). Not strength. Not beauty. Not material composition. Knowledge — and with it, accountability.
  • Iblis's error was to reason from substance. His argument — fire outranks clay — is a piece of analogy set against an explicit command, and it ignores the one thing that mattered: what had been breathed into the clay.
The angels vindicated
HadithTier 2

"No soul is killed unjustly but a share of its sin falls upon the first son of Adam, for he was the first to establish killing."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3335 · Sahih Muslim 1677 · Ibn Masʿud RA
Qur'anTier 1

"…whoever kills a soul unless for a soul or for corruption in the land — it is as if he had slain mankind entirely; and whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely."

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:32
BibleTier 3

"And it came to pass… that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him."

Genesis 4:8 (KJV) — bloodshed arrives in the first generation
The weight of the word khalīfah

The term is usually translated "vicegerent," "steward" or "successor," and all three are partial. Its root kh-l-f carries succession — coming after someone — and also deputation: acting on behalf of an authority that remains the authority.

Two things follow. First, the office is delegated, not owned. A khalīfah governs property that belongs to someone else and will be asked about it. Qur'an 45:13 makes the subjection of the natural world (sakhkhara lakum) a delegation, not a conquest.

Second, the office is examinable. "Then We made you successors in the land after them, that We may observe how you will do" (10:14). The vicegerency is not a prize. It is a posting with a report attached.

This is the single most consequential concept on the page for anyone reading it in 2026: the entire ecological argument of Chapter XVII is, in Islamic terms, a question about whether the khalīfah has been keeping his accounts.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XXII

The Clay — Five Words for One Making

الطين — خمس مراحل
The theological moment · not a datable event

The Qur'an does not use one word for the material Adam AS was made from. It uses five, and they are not interchangeable. Whether that sequence describes a process or is a set of images for a single act is one of the genuine open questions of Islamic theology.

1
Turāb  ·  تُرَاب  — dry dust of the earth

The base material, entirely dry. "Indeed, the example of Jesus with Allah is like that of Adam. He created him from dust (turāb); then He said to him: Be — and he was." (Al ʿImran 3:59). Also 18:37, 22:5, 30:20, 35:11, 40:67. This is the term that ties Adam AS to every human conception and to the grave.

2
Ṭīn  ·  طِين  — dust joined with water; wet clay

"…who perfected everything which He created and began the creation of man from clay (ṭīn)." (as-Sajdah 32:7). Also 6:2, 7:12, 17:61, 23:12, 38:71. The moment the dry becomes workable.

3
Ṭīn Lāzib  ·  طِينٍ لَازِب  — sticky, cohesive clay

"Indeed, We created them from a sticky clay." (as-Saffat 37:11). Lāzib means adhesive, clinging, holding its shape. The material has acquired the property that makes forming possible.

4
Ḥamaʾ Masnūn  ·  حَمَإٍ مَّسْنُون  — dark, aged, altered mud

"And We did certainly create man out of clay from an altered black mud." (al-Hijr 15:26, and again at 15:28 and 15:33). Ḥamaʾ is black fetid mud; masnūn carries both "poured into a mould" and "altered by standing" — the lexicographers give both. Time has acted on the material.

5
Ṣalṣāl ka'l-Fakhkhār  ·  صَلْصَالٍ كَالْفَخَّار  — dried clay that rings like pottery

"He created man from clay like pottery." (ar-Rahman 55:14). Ṣalṣāl is clay so dried that it produces a sound when struck. The material is now fired and hardened — the finished vessel, before the breath.

HadithTier 3

"Allah created Adam from a handful which He took from all of the earth. So the children of Adam came in accordance with the earth: some of them red, some white, some black, and some between that; some soft, some coarse; some evil, and some good."

Sunan Abi Dawud 4693 · Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 2955 · Abu Musa al-Ashʿari RA — hasan sahih

The clay was not taken from one place. It was gathered from every part of the earth — which is why human beings differ: in colour, in temperament, in disposition. Some dark as the deep soil, some pale as chalk, some golden as sand. All from the same handful. And the theological consequence is stated in the Qur'an without ambiguity:

Qur'anTier 1

"And He has subjected to you (sakhkhara lakum) whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth — all from Him."

Surah al-Jathiyah 45:13 · cf. an-Nahl 16:5–8 (the cattle) and Ya-Sin 36:71–73 — delegation, not conquest
Qur'anTier 1

إِنَّ أَكْرَمَكُمْ عِندَ اللَّهِ أَتْقَاكُمْ

"O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you."

Surah al-Hujurat 49:13
What science can say about the material

The claim that a human being is made of earth is straightforwardly true. By mass the body is oxygen (~65%), carbon (~18%), hydrogen (~10%), nitrogen (~3%), calcium (~1.4%) and phosphorus (~1.1%) — the same inventory, in different proportions, as the crust beneath it. Every atom was forged in a star, weathered into rock, dissolved into water, and taken up through food.

There is no special human substance. Nothing in the body's chemistry distinguishes it from the chemistry of soil except arrangement.

Where the instruments stop. Science can describe the neural substrate of what religion calls the soul — theory of mind, recursive language, autobiographical memory, moral emotion, the capacity to model one's own death. What it cannot do is adjudicate whether that substrate exhausts the phenomenon. Whether moral obligation genuinely binds; whether a person has standing before God — no experiment settles these. This is a boundary between kinds of question, not a gap awaiting better data.

What the five terms are doing

Three readings are held by serious scholars, and the choice between them is not forced by the text:

One act, five images. The classical majority position. The terms are descriptions of one material at one moment, given from different angles — as one might describe the same object as "wooden," "carved," "old" and "dark." The variety is rhetorical richness, not chronology.

One act, five stages. A sequential reading held by many commentators: the material genuinely passed through these conditions in order, over an unspecified duration, before the form was completed. The ordering is not arbitrary; it is metallurgically and ceramically coherent.

A pointer to process. A modern reading that sees in the graded sequence — and in aṭwāran, "in stages" (71:14) — room for the material substrate to have a history. Its strength is that it takes the sequence seriously. Its cost is that no classical commentator read it this way, which is a real cost and should be counted as one.

A NOTE ON THE SIXTY CUBITS

"Allah created Adam, and his height was sixty cubits." — Sahih al-Bukhari 3326 · Sahih Muslim 2841. Tier 2

This narration is authentic in transmission — it is in both Sahihayn — and it creates a real difficulty for any straightforward fit with the fossil record, which shows no hominin of roughly twenty-seven metres. The difficulty should not be minimised or explained away too quickly.

Responses within the tradition vary, and none is agreed: some take it literally, as a miracle standing outside natural history and therefore not answerable to it; some read it of Adam's form in Paradise rather than on earth, noting that the same hadith says those entering Paradise will resemble Adam in form; some question the standard of the cubit intended. The hadith itself adds that "people have been decreasing in stature since," which is not what the skeletal record shows.

It is presented here unharmonised. Anyone who tells you this is easily resolved has not looked at it carefully. It is a genuine tension between an authenticated text and a well-evidenced science, and honest scholarship names such tensions rather than smoothing them.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XXIII

The Breath, The Names & The Prostration

نفخ الروح وتعليم الأسماء
In the heavens, before the descent

The form was complete and it was not yet alive. What happened next is the single event on which the whole of human dignity, in Islamic theology, rests.

Qur'anTier 1

فَإِذَا سَوَّيْتُهُ وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِي فَقَعُوا لَهُ سَاجِدِينَ

"So when I have proportioned him and breathed into him of My spirit (rūḥī), then fall down to him in prostration."

Surah al-Hijr 15:29 · Sad 38:72
Qur'anTier 1

"…then He proportioned him and breathed into him from His spirit, and made for you hearing and vision and hearts. Little are you grateful."

Surah as-Sajdah 32:9 — the faculties arrive with the breath

Note the order in 32:9, because it is doing theological work. Hearing, sight and the heart are not listed as features of the clay. They arrive with the rūḥ. The instruments of knowledge and the capacity for knowledge are given in the same act — which is why the test that follows is a test of naming, and why the prostration is commanded on the basis of what was breathed rather than what was moulded.

HadithTier 2

"Allah created Adam, making him sixty cubits tall. When He created him He said: Go and greet that group of angels, and listen to how they greet you, for it will be your greeting and the greeting of your descendants. So he said: As-salāmu ʿalaykum. They replied: As-salāmu ʿalayka wa raḥmatullāh — adding to his greeting the words 'and the mercy of Allah.'"

Sahih al-Bukhari 3326 · Sahih Muslim 2841 · Abu Hurayrah RA

The first instruction ever given to a human being was to go and greet. Not to worship, not to labour, not to rule — to offer peace. And the reply came back with more in it than the greeting had contained. The pattern of the whole relationship is set in that one exchange: the human offers, and receives back something larger than he offered.

HadithTier 3

"When Allah created Adam and breathed the spirit into him, he sneezed and said: Al-ḥamdu lillāh. So he praised Allah by His permission, and his Lord said to him: Yarḥamuka Allāh — may Allah have mercy on you."

Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 3368 · Ibn Hibban · graded hasan — Abu Hurayrah RA

The first words ever spoken by a human being were praise. The first words ever spoken to a human being, in reply, were mercy. In those two exchanges the entire human story is encoded: we are creatures who praise, and we are recipients of mercy. Everything the Qur'an later asks of a human being is a variation on holding those two facts together.

Qur'anTier 1

"And He taught Adam the names — all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said: Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful. They said: Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:31–32

Adam AS named everything. The angels, limitless in worship but bounded in knowledge, could only say: we know only what You have taught us. This was the demonstration — and it is worth being precise about what it demonstrated. Not that Adam AS knew more than the angels by nature, but that he could be taught, indefinitely, and they could not. The capacity to acquire is what was on display. It is also the capacity that carries the burden of accountability, because a creature that can learn can also refuse to.

Qur'anTier 1

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ

"We have certainly created the human being in the best of forms (aḥsani taqwīm)."

Surah at-Tin 95:4 — taqwīm is proportioning and setting upright: physical and moral at once
Qur'anTier 1

أَلَسْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ ۖ قَالُوا بَلَىٰ ۛ شَهِدْنَا

"And when your Lord took from the children of Adam — from their loins — their descendants, and made them testify concerning themselves: Am I not your Lord? They said: Yes, we have testified. [This] lest you should say on the Day of Resurrection: Indeed, we were unaware of this."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:172

This is among the most extraordinary passages in the Qur'an, and it belongs here because it happens before any human being was born. Every descendant of Adam AS was brought forth, addressed, and answered. The theological consequence is that no one arrives in this world neutral: the fiṭrah of the hadith in Chapter XIX — "every child is born upon the fiṭrah" — is the residue of that testimony. Belief is not, on this account, the acquisition of something foreign. It is recollection.

HadithTier 3

Allah wiped Adam's back and brought forth from it every soul He would create from his descendants until the Day of Resurrection. Adam saw among them a man whose face shone, and asked who he was. He was told: your descendant Dawud. Adam asked how long he would live, and was told sixty years — so he gave him forty of his own.

Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi 3076 · Muwatta Malik · Abu Hurayrah RA — graded hasan; a report narrated widely and read by scholars for its theological sense rather than as a literal chronology

Where the two accounts stand at this point. Science has followed the story to a species with symbolic language and a fossil record. It can go no further, and it says so: there is no instrument that detects a breath, a covenant or an act of address.

What scripture adds is not an alternative mechanism but a claim about standing. The khalīfah is entrusted. The one who bears the breath is addressed. Both are answerable. Whether that claim is true is not something a timeline can settle. But notice again what it identifies as decisive — the capacity to be taught, to name, to be spoken to — and notice that it is the same faculty the archaeology of Chapter XIX arrives at from the opposite direction.

CHAPTER XXIV

Hawwa AS — The Mate from the Self

حواء عليها السلام
In Jannah, before the descent

Adam AS was alone among a creation that could not answer him. What the Qur'an says about what happened next is brief, and what tradition has added to it is extensive — and the gap between the two is worth mapping carefully, because a great deal has been built on it.

Qur'anTier 1

"O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul (nafs wāḥidah) and created from it its mate, and dispersed from both of them many men and women."

Surah an-Nisa 4:1 — the opening verse of the surah on family and rights
Qur'anTier 1

"He created you from one soul. Then He made from it its mate, that he might dwell in tranquillity with her."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:189 · cf. az-Zumar 39:6
Qur'anTier 1

"And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find repose in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy."

Surah ar-Rum 30:21
WHAT THE QUR'AN DOES AND DOES NOT SAY

It says: she was created min-hā — from it, from the same nafs. It says the purpose was sakan, dwelling and repose. It says affection and mercy were placed between them. It says humanity dispersed from both.

It does not say: her name. "Hawwa" appears nowhere in the Qur'an — she is zawj, the mate, throughout. It does not say she was made from a rib. It does not say when, relative to Adam's entry into Jannah, she was created. It does not say she was created second in dignity, and nothing in the grammar supports that reading.

HadithTier 2

"Treat women well, for woman was created from a rib, and the most curved part of the rib is its top. If you try to straighten it you will break it, and if you leave it, it will remain curved. So treat women well."

Sahih al-Bukhari 3331 · Sahih Muslim 1468 · Abu Hurayrah RA

Two observations that are usually missed, and both change the reading.

First, the hadith is an instruction about conduct, not a lecture on anatomy. Its grammatical shape is imperative — istawṣū bi'n-nisāʾ khayran, "treat women well" — and the rib appears as the reason for that instruction, framed at both ends by it. Whatever one concludes about the origin claim, the hadith's own purpose is unambiguous, and a reading that extracts the rib while discarding the command has inverted the text.

Second, a significant body of scholarship reads min ḍilaʿ figuratively — as a statement about disposition rather than material. Al-Qurṭubī and others note the possibility. The image would then be: she is made in a way that has its own curvature, its own integrity of form, and the attempt to force her into another shape destroys rather than corrects. On that reading the hadith is a warning against a specific male failure mode, which is exactly what its framing says it is.

A DIFFERENCE THE TWO SCRIPTURES GENUINELY HAVE

Genesis 2:21–22 places the rib in the scriptural text itself: "And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam… and he took one of his ribs." In Islam the rib appears only in the Hadith, never in the Qur'an, which says min-hā — from it, from the same soul.

This is a real structural difference and it has consequences downstream. It is one of the reasons the two traditions' treatments of blame in the garden diverge, which Chapter XXV takes up.

The Biblical account
BibleTier 3

"And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him."

Genesis 2:18 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…and the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man."

Genesis 2:22 (KJV)
BibleTier 3

"…This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh."

Genesis 2:23 (KJV) — note the same emphasis on shared substance as the Qur'anic min-hā
On her name, and on what is not known

"Hawwa" (حواء) is universally used in Islamic tradition and appears in the tafsir and history literature — al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathir — but not in the Qur'an and not in the two Sahih collections. Its usual derivation is from ḥayy, living, matching the Hebrew Ḥawwāh of Genesis 3:20: "the mother of all living." Tier 4

Whether she was created before or after Adam AS entered Jannah is disputed. Ibn Hajar records the view that she was created before his entry. Others place it after. There is no decisive text.

What can be said with confidence is narrow and worth stating plainly: same origin, same substance, mutual repose, joint dispersal of humanity, and — as Chapter XXV shows — joint address, joint transgression and joint forgiveness. Every element of the Qur'anic account is grammatically dual. That is not a small thing, and it is frequently obscured by material that entered from elsewhere.

CHAPTER XXV

The Trust, The Tree & The Descent

الأمانة والشجرة والهبوط
The moral beginning of history

Freedom is granted, misused, and — in one tradition decisively, in the other partially — repaired. Here Islam and Christianity diverge most instructively, and the divergence is not a detail.

Qur'anTier 1

إِنَّا عَرَضْنَا الْأَمَانَةَ عَلَى السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالْجِبَالِ

"Indeed, We offered the Trust (amānah) to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man undertook it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant (ẓalūman jahūlā)."

Surah al-Ahzab 33:72 — both are intensive forms; Pickthall gives "a tyrant and a fool"

The mountains refused. That is the measure of what was accepted. The amānah is generally read as moral responsibility — the capacity to obey or disobey knowingly, and to be answerable for which. And the verse's closing description of the one who accepted it is not flattering: ẓalūman jahūlā, given to wrongdoing and to ignorance. The Qur'an compliments humanity and indicts it in a single sentence, and both halves are meant.

The Qur'anic account
Qur'anTier 1

"But Satan whispered to them to make apparent to them that which was concealed from them… and he swore to them: Indeed, I am to you from among the sincere advisors."

"They said: Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers."

Surah al-Aʿraf 7:23 — the words Adam AS received from his Lord (2:37); note the dual "we"
Qur'anTier 1

"And no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another."

Surah al-Anʿam 6:164 · cf. 17:15, 35:18, 39:7, 53:38 — repeated five times

BibleTier 3

Romans 5:12 (KJV) — the textual basis of the doctrine of original sin

Reading them together: The narratives run in close parallel — a garden, a prohibition, a tempter, a transgression, an expulsion — and then diverge sharply on consequence.

In the Qur'an, Adam AS repents and is forgiven before the descent. His fall is a lapse, not a corruption of nature, and 6:164 explicitly rules out inherited guilt — a point the Qur'an repeats in five separate places, which is the strongest form of emphasis it uses. In Pauline Christianity, the fall transmits a condition requiring redemption, which is why 1 Corinthians 15:45 frames Christ as "the last Adam."

The Qur'an also assigns the transgression to both together — every relevant verb in 7:19–23 is grammatically dual — and names no serpent: Iblis addresses them directly. Where the Qur'an does single out an actor, at 20:120, it is Adam AS whom Satan approaches.

These are not variant tellings of one story so much as two theologies of the human condition using shared imagery. Reading them as the same story told differently loses what is actually at stake, which is the question of what a human being is by default: wounded and in need of rescue, or capable and in need of guidance.

ON THE DESCENT ITSELF

Ihbiṭū — "descend, all of you" (2:36, 2:38, 7:24, 20:123). The command is plural and it is addressed to Adam AS, his wife, and their adversary together. It is worth noticing that in 2:38 the descent comes with a promise attached: "And when guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance — there will be no fear concerning them, nor will they grieve." The expulsion and the offer of guidance are given in the same breath. The earth is not presented as a punishment. It is presented as the place the vicegerency was always going to be exercised (2:30 announced it before any transgression occurred), now entered under different conditions.

CHAPTER XXVI

Where They Landed — And The Long Search

مواضع الهبوط ورحلة اللقاء
The first human journey

This chapter tells one of the most beloved stories in the Islamic tradition. It also carries the heaviest evidential caveat on the entire page, and the caveat comes first — because the story is worth telling properly, and telling it properly means saying what it is.

READ THIS BEFORE THE STORY

The Qur'an says nothing about where Adam AS and Hawwa AS landed. Not a place, not a direction, not a distance. Surah al-Baqarah 2:36 says only ihbiṭū — descend — and speaks of "a residence and provision for a time."

There is no authentic marfūʿ hadith on the question. Shaykh Muhammad Salih al-Munajjid states the position directly: the Qur'an is silent, and there is no sound narration traced to the Prophet ﷺ that explains it. The report "Adam came down in al-Hind and felt lonely" is weak (Ibn ʿAsakir, Tarikh Dimashq 7/437).

What exists are āthār — statements of Companions and Successors, recorded in the tafsir and history literature, several bearing clear marks of isrāʾīliyyāt. Ibn Kathir preserves them and then observes plainly that these are matters for which there is no proof. Tier 4 to Tier 5.

They are given here in full because they are part of how a billion people have imagined this moment for fourteen centuries, and because pretending they do not exist would be its own kind of dishonesty. They are narrated, not affirmed. Read them as the tradition's memory, not as its evidence.

"He went in search of her, and wherever he placed his foot a village grew, and between his steps were barren wastes. He travelled until he reached Jamʿ, and Hawwa drew near to him — and so it was called Muzdalifah. They recognised one another at ʿArafat — and so it was called ʿArafat. They gathered at Jamʿ — and so it was called Jamʿ."

al-Ṭabarī, Tarikh Vol. 1 · a folk-etymological cluster; the place-name derivations are the report's own explanation, not independent evidence
Reading the story for what it carries

Set the evidential question aside for a moment and look at the shape of the narrative, because the shape is why it survived.

Two people who were made from one soul are separated by the width of an ocean. Neither knows where the other is. One of them walks — and the walking is not incidental: wherever he placed his foot a village grew. The search for the other half of oneself is, in the image, identical with the settlement of the earth. Human civilisation is a by-product of longing.

And they meet at ʿArafat, on the plain where every year some two million pilgrims still stand from noon until sunset — the one rite without which the Hajj is invalid. The story makes the central act of Islamic pilgrimage a re-enactment of a reunion.

Whether or not a single word of it is historically established, it is doing something the tradition needed done: it makes the geography of worship into a memory of love, and it makes exile into the beginning of the world rather than the end of it.

What can actually be assessed

The names. The etymologies are real Arabic. ʿArafa is to know or recognise; izdalafa is to draw near; jamʿ is gathering. But a name that can carry a meaning is not evidence that the event named it. These are folk etymologies, and folk etymologies are common in every language.

Four religions claim the same footprint. The 1.8-metre depression at the summit is held to be the Buddha's left footprint by Buddhists, Shiva's by Śaivite Hindus, Adam's by Muslims, and by some Christians that of Adam or St Thomas. That one rock carries four incompatible attributions is itself informative about the class of claim.

The Tomb of Eve. The earliest textual mention is al-Hamdānī (c. 893–945 CE) — some 250 years after the Prophet ﷺ — followed by al-Idrīsī (c. 1154), Ibn Jubayr, Ibn al-Mujāwir and Ibn Khallikān. Ibn Battuta, who visited Jeddah, ignores the matter entirely. The enclosure was recorded by medieval travellers as over 120 metres long, which does not correspond to any human body — and which, note, does not match the sixty cubits of Bukhari 3326 either (roughly 27 m). The structure was demolished in 1928 and the site sealed with concrete in 1975.

The honest summary: geographically unverifiable, evidentially Tier 4–5, culturally immense. All three are true at once, and a serious reader can hold all three.

The narrations say al-Hind. That word does not mean the modern Republic of India. In classical Arabic geography al-Hind was the whole Indian subcontinent together with its islands, Ceylon included — which is why the same reports specify Sarandīb in the next breath. Rendering it "India" imports a twentieth-century border into a ninth-century sentence. Below is what each place was called, and what it is called now.

In the narration Then — what the name meant Now
al-Hind
الهند
The classical Arabic geographical region: the Indian subcontinent and its adjacent islands, Ceylon included. A cultural and maritime zone, not a state. Split across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Not a reference to the modern Republic of India.
Sarandīb
سرنديب
The Arab name for the island, from Sanskrit Siṃhaladvīpa, "island of the Sinhala people." Also called Saylān / Saheelān in Arabic; Taprobane to the Greeks; Lankā and Tāmraparṇī in Sanskrit. Sri Lanka — via Portuguese Ceilão and Dutch Zeylan to English Ceylon; independent 1948, renamed Sri Lanka on 22 May 1972. Sarandīb also gave English the word serendipity (Horace Walpole, 1754).
Mount Nūd
نوذ
The mountain named in al-Ṭabarī's report. Arab travellers — Sulaymān al-Tājir (851 CE) and Ibn Battuta (1344) — call it Jabal al-Rāhūn (جبل الراهون). Sri Lankan Muslims call it Baba Adam Malai, "Mountain of Father Adam." Adam's Peak — 2,243 m, Ratnapura District, Sabaragamuwa Province. Sri Pada ("sacred footprint") and Samanala Kanda in Sinhala; Samantakūṭa in Pali; Sivanolipathamalai in Tamil; Ratnagiri ("mountain of gems") in Sanskrit. Within the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, UNESCO World Heritage since 2010.
Juddah
جدة
A Red Sea fishing settlement, traditionally founded by the Yemeni Quḍāʿa tribe around 522 BCE. Two readings of the name: Juddah (with ḍamma) = "seashore" — the reading linguists favour; Jaddah (with fatḥa) = "grandmother," the folk reading tying it to Hawwa AS as the ancestress of humanity. Jeddah, Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia — the principal Red Sea port and gateway for Hajj pilgrims. Its historic core, Al-Balad, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.
ʿArafāt The plain east of Makkah where, in the narration, they recognised one another (taʿāruf). Mount ʿArafāt / Jabal al-Raḥmah — the standing (wuqūf) here on 9 Dhul-Hijjah is the pillar without which the Hajj is invalid.
Jamʿ The gathering-place where, in the narration, Hawwa AS drew near (izdilāf). Muzdalifah — where pilgrims halt overnight between ʿArafāt and Minā.
Dastumaysan Where the reports place Iblis: a district of Maysān in lower Iraq, near Basra. Some versions say al-Ubulla. The Maysān Governorate region of southern Iraq.
Iṣbahān Where the reports place the serpent — a figure absent from the Qur'anic account entirely (see Chapter XXV). Isfahan, central Iran.
Scroll the table sideways to see every column →
WHY THE CORRECTION MATTERS

Two things are lost when al-Hind is flattened to "India." The first is accuracy: the reports themselves name Sarandīb, an island the modern Republic of India does not contain. The second is subtler — the narration is not making a geopolitical claim at all. It is placing the descent at the far eastern edge of the world its audience knew, an ocean away from the Ḥijāz, so that the journey to reunion is as long as the world is wide. Modern national borders are not merely absent from the report; they would defeat its point.

Qur'anTier 1

"Then Adam received from his Lord words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of repentance, the Merciful."

Surah al-Baqarah 2:37
Qur'anTier 1

"Indeed, Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the family of Ibrahim and the family of ʿImran over the worlds."

Surah Al ʿImran 3:33 — Adam AS named first among the chosen
ON ADAM AS AS A PROPHET

Islamic tradition holds Adam AS to be not only the first human but the first prophet — the recipient of revelation and the first to teach worship. The commonly cited support is the long narration of Abu Dharr RA, in which the Prophet ﷺ is asked whether Adam was a prophet and replies that he was "a prophet who was spoken to" (nabiyyun mukallam) — recorded by Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim. Tier 3

The grading of that narration has been disputed: several critics weakened the chain, while others accepted it, and Ibn Kathir discusses the disagreement in al-Bidayah. The doctrine does not rest on it alone — Qur'an 3:33 places Adam AS in the line of the chosen, and 2:37 has him receiving words from his Lord, which is address. But the specific narration is not of Sahihayn standard and should not be cited as though it were.

✦ ✦ ✦
CHAPTER XXVII

The Lineage — Adam AS to Nuh AS and Beyond

النسل — من آدم إلى نوح وما بعده
From the first family to the present hour

From two people, humanity. And then — almost immediately — the first murder, the first burial, and the first of the long series of missions that THE CHRONICLES' main timeline exists to record.

Qur'anTier 1

"And recite to them the story of Adam's two sons in truth, when they both offered a sacrifice, and it was accepted from one of them but not from the other. He said: I will surely kill you. He said: Allah only accepts from the righteous."

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:27 — the two sons are unnamed in the Qur'an
Qur'anTier 1

"Then Allah sent a crow searching in the ground to show him how to hide the disgrace of his brother. He said: O woe to me! Have I failed to be like this crow and hide the body of my brother?"

Surah al-Ma'idah 5:31 — the first burial, learned from a bird

The names Qabil and Habil (Cain and Abel in the Biblical text, Genesis 4) come from tradition rather than the Qur'an. Tier 4 What the Qur'an gives is the pattern: envy, a rejected offering, a threat, a killing, and then — in 5:32, immediately after — the universal law that the killing of one soul is the killing of all. The first murder is used to legislate against every murder after it.

AtharTier 4

"Between Adam and Nuh were ten generations (qurūn), all of them upon Islam."

Attributed to Ibn ʿAbbas RA · Sahih Ibn Hibban 6190 · al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak — mawqūf on a Companion, though some scholars treat it as carrying a raised ruling given its subject matter

This single report does a great deal of theological work. It establishes that the earliest human religion was monotheism, and that shirk was a later corruption rather than an original condition — a claim Qur'an 10:19 supports directly ("Mankind was not but one community, then they differed"). The story of Nuh AS then becomes intelligible: he is sent not to introduce monotheism but to restore it.

Figure Status in the Qur'an What is known, and on what authority
Adam AS Named (25 times) First human, first prophet. Al ʿImran 3:33 places him first among those Allah chose.
Shith / Seth Not named Tradition holds him the successor to Adam AS and inheritor of his knowledge. From Genesis 4:25 and the tafsir literature. Tier 4 No Qur'anic mention whatever.
Idris AS Named (19:56–57, 21:85) "Truthful, a prophet… We raised him to a high station." Commonly identified with Enoch and placed before Nuh AS — but this is genuinely disputed: Ibn Kathir records the view that Idris came after Nuh AS, partly on the basis of the Miʿraj narration placing him in the fourth heaven above Yusuf AS and Harun AS. The identification with Enoch is Tier 4, not settled.
Nuh AS Named (43 times) Preached 950 years (29:14). The Flood. One of the five ulū al-ʿazm — the messengers of firm resolve. Every human alive after the Flood descends from him and those with him, per the Qur'anic and Biblical accounts alike.
Hud AS · Salih AS Named Sent to ʿAd and Thamud — Arabian peoples destroyed for rejection. These are the "extinctions" of the Qur'anic historical register, and they are moral rather than geological.
Ibrahim AS Named (69 times) The second of the five ulū al-ʿazm. The line splits at his sons: Ismaʿil AS toward the Arabs and, in time, the Prophet ﷺ; Ishaq AS toward the Israelite prophets.
ON DATING ANY OF THIS

Islam supplies no chronology for the period between Adam AS and Ibrahim AS, and any figure presented as one is an inference, not a text.

The commonly quoted dates — Adam at 4004 BCE, the Flood at 2348 BCE — come from Archbishop James Ussher's Annales Veteris Testamenti (1650), calculated from the Masoretic genealogies of Genesis. They are a seventeenth-century Anglican computation, not an Islamic one, and Muslims are under no obligation to them whatever. The traditional Hebrew calendar gives a different figure again — 3761 BCE, Anno Mundi Year 1. The Septuagint genealogies give numbers roughly 1,500 years longer than the Masoretic. Three scriptural traditions, three incompatible answers, from the same underlying source material.

Neither the Qur'an nor the authenticated Sunnah dates the creation of Adam AS, the Flood, or anything before Ibrahim AS. The silence is not a gap to be filled with borrowed arithmetic. This page therefore gives no date, and treats any that circulates as extra-Qur'anic.

The question deserves a direct answer, in both registers, because the two are usually confused.

In geological terms

Phanerozoic Eon → Cenozoic Era → Quaternary Period → Holocene Epoch → Meghalayan Age. Established in Chapter XIII. The Anthropocene was formally rejected in March 2024 and is not the current epoch, whatever the newspapers say.

In prophetic terms

Islamic tradition does not divide history into named "eras" the way geology does. What it has is a succession of missions: each people receives a messenger (10:47, 16:36), and the era of a prophet runs until the next is sent.

By that structure, the era of Nuh AS closed with the missions after him. The era now running is the era of Muhammad ﷺ — the final messenger (33:40, khātam an-nabiyyīn) — which opened in 610 CE and continues to the Hour. There will be no further prophetic era. This is the last one, and every human being alive is inside it.

What follows within it is not another prophethood but the age of the ummah: the period in which the guidance already given is carried, interpreted and lived. The main timeline of THE CHRONICLES is a record of exactly this — nearly 5,800 years of what humanity did with what it was given.

Where this page hands over. Everything before Adam AS is preparation. Everything from Adam AS onward is history — and history is what THE CHRONICLES was built to hold. The prophetic register, the eight world regions and the thematic band of twenty-five columns, the dual BCE/CE and AH calendars, the 550 events and counting: all of it begins where this page ends.

The story of everything before Adam AS is the story of a world being made ready. The story of Adam AS is the story of a beginning. Every human being who has ever lived is a continuation of what began when the breath entered the clay — and history, in the only sense that concerns a khalīfah, started then.

PART SEVEN

Two Books

Where the accounts agree, where they differ, where scholars genuinely disagree — and what the rest of the world's traditions say about the same question.

CHAPTER XXVIII

The Two Accounts, Side by Side

مقارنة الروايتين

Where Genesis and the Qur'anic material describe the same sequence, and where they part:

Element Genesis / Bible Qur'an & Hadith Point of difference
Duration Six days, then rest on the seventh (Gen 1:31–2:2) Six ayyām / periods (7:54, 41:9–12); no rest — "no fatigue touched Us" (50:38) The Qur'an explicitly denies divine rest, reading it as implying limitation.
Order Light → firmament → land & plants → luminaries → sea life & birds → land animals & man Earth in two periods → provisions in four → heavens in two (41:9–12) Genesis gives a strict day-by-day sequence; the Qur'an is thematic and dispersed across surahs.
Method "And God said, Let there be…" — creation by word Kun fayakūn — "Be, and it is" (2:117, 36:82) Substantially the same: creation by command, not by struggle against chaos. This is a real and underrated agreement.
Human material "Dust of the ground" (Gen 2:7) — one term Turāb (3:59), ṭīn (32:7), ṭīn lāzib (37:11), ḥamaʾ masnūn (15:26), ṣalṣāl (55:14) The Qur'an gives a graded sequence of five materials; Genesis gives one. See Chapter XXII.
The divine breath "Breathed into his nostrils the breath of life" (Gen 2:7) "Breathed into him of My spirit" (15:29, 32:9) Closely parallel. Islam avoids the "image and likeness" language of Gen 1:26 on tanzīh grounds.
Creation of the mate From Adam's rib during a deep sleep (Gen 2:21–22) — in the scriptural text "From it He created its mate" (4:1, 39:6); the rib appears in Hadith (Bukhari 3331), not the Qur'an The Qur'anic text is not explicit about the rib; the Hadith is read figuratively by many. See Chapter XXIV.
Her name Eve / Ḥawwāh, named at Gen 3:20 Unnamed — zawj throughout; "Hawwa" is from tradition A silence in the Qur'an that later literature filled from the same root.
The tempter The serpent (Gen 3:1) Iblis / Shayṭān, addressing them directly (7:20, 20:120) No serpent anywhere in the Qur'anic account.
Blame Eve takes and gives (Gen 3:6); 1 Timothy 2:14 extends it Both addressed together; every verb in 7:19–23 is dual; "Satan caused them to slip" (2:36) The Qur'an does not single out the woman. A major exegetical and social difference.
Consequence Expulsion; sin and death enter the world (Rom 5:12) Repentance accepted before descent (2:37, 20:122); no inherited guilt (6:164, repeated 5×) The sharpest theological divergence between the two traditions.
Human role Dominion; to "dress and keep" the garden (Gen 1:28, 2:15) Khalīfah — steward under accountability (2:30, 6:165, 10:14) Both stewardship; the Qur'anic term carries stronger legal accountability and an explicit examination.
Angelic homage Not to Adam; Heb 1:6 has it to the Son Commanded to Adam and given (2:34, 7:11, 15:29–30) Present in the Qur'an as a decisive event; absent from Genesis.

CHAPTER XXIX

Where Scholars Genuinely Differ

مواضع الخلاف بين العلماء

There is no single religious position on human origins, and presenting one as consensus would be dishonest. Within Islam and Christianity alike, serious scholars occupy several positions — each with its own textual reasoning and its own real difficulties.

What follows gives each position its strongest form and its actual cost. Nobody is caricatured, and no position is presented as obviously correct, because none of them is.

1 · Special creation, no common descent

Adam AS was created directly and miraculously, with no biological ancestry. Fossil hominins are either separate creations or misinterpreted.

Strength: takes the texts at face value throughout, including the sixty-cubit hadith, and requires no reinterpretation of the clay narratives.

Difficulty: requires rejecting a very large and mutually corroborating body of genetic, palaeontological and comparative-anatomical evidence — not one line of evidence but many that independently converge.

2 · Evolution of the body, special creation of the soul

Biological evolution proceeded as described, but at a chosen point Allah conferred the rūḥ — moral and spiritual accountability — on a member of the lineage.

Strength: preserves both the science and the theological uniqueness of the human person; maps cleanly onto Qur'an 32:7–9, where the clay and the breath are distinct acts.

Difficulty: must reinterpret the clay narratives as symbolic rather than descriptive. Broadly the position of Catholic teaching since Humani Generis (1950), and held by a number of contemporary Muslim scholars.

3 · Adam AS as first accountable human within a population

Adam AS is historical but not the sole biological ancestor — the first to receive revelation and moral responsibility within an existing human population.

Strength: compatible with population genetics, which finds no bottleneck of two individuals at any point in the human past.

Difficulty: strains the verses describing all humanity as banī Ādam, "children of Adam," and the language of 4:1 about dispersal from a single soul and its mate.

4 · Non-concordism

Scripture and science answer different questions and should not be harmonised at all. The creation narratives are theological texts about meaning, purpose and covenant — not about mechanism.

Strength: avoids forcing either discipline into the other's shape, and immunises faith against the next scientific revision.

Difficulty: some find it concedes too much historical content, and it sits awkwardly with a text that repeatedly points to the natural world as evidence.

ON CONCORDISM GENERALLY — THE METHODOLOGICAL WARNING

The practice of matching scriptural verses to current scientific findings — sometimes called iʿjāz ʿilmī, "scientific miracle" literature — has been criticised from within the religious traditions themselves, and the criticism is worth taking seriously rather than dismissing as scepticism.

The core objection: science revises itself. A verse harmonised with the physics of one generation may need re-harmonising with the next, which makes faith hostage to the current state of a discipline. When the harmonisation fails, the verse appears to have failed with it — and it never made the claim in the first place.

Classical exegesis, working centuries before modern science, read most of the verses cited on this page quite differently, and read them coherently. That should be sobering for anyone confident that the modern reading is the obvious one. Hold the correspondences on this page lightly: as invitations to reflection, not as proofs, and never as the load-bearing basis of anyone's belief.

CHAPTER XXX

What Other Traditions Say

ما تقوله التقاليد الأخرى

Across every major tradition, humanity has grappled with the same question: what was there before? Below is how the other great schools answer it — with precision, and without caricature.

JUDAISM — THE TORAH

Bereshit 1–2 describes creation in six days. God creates by speech: Vayomer Elohim — "and God said." Light and darkness on Day 1, the firmament on Day 2, dry land and plants on Day 3, the luminaries on Day 4, fish and birds on Day 5, land animals and Adam on Day 6.

The traditional Hebrew calendar dates creation to 3761 BCE (Anno Mundi Year 1). But Maimonides (Guide for the Perplexed, 12th c.) held that Genesis need not be read literally — that where reason establishes something firmly, the text must be read accordingly, and that the "days" may be allegorical. That principle, formulated eight centuries before Darwin, remains the backbone of most non-literalist Jewish readings.

CHRISTIANITY — GENESIS

Christianity inherits Genesis with four major interpretive traditions:

Young Earth Creationism: literal six days; universe roughly 6,000 years old.
Old Earth Creationism: the "days" represent geological ages.
Day-Age Theory: each day equals an era.
Theistic Evolution: God creates through evolution — the dominant position of the Catholic Church and most mainline Protestant denominations.

Pope John Paul II told the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in 1996 that evolution is "more than a hypothesis." The Catechism (§283) states that scientific questions about origins "invite us to even greater admiration for the greatness of the Creator." Augustine had already warned, in De Genesi ad litteram, against Christians making confident scientific claims from scripture and being justly ridiculed for them.

HINDUISM

The universe is cyclical — without a single beginning or end. Brahma creates, Vishnu sustains, Shiva dissolves, and the cycle repeats. One kalpa — a day of Brahma — is 4.32 billion years, a figure often noted for its proximity to the scientific age of the Earth (4.54 billion), though the coincidence is of magnitude rather than of referent: the kalpa is a cosmic cycle, not a planetary age.

The present is placed in the Kali Yuga, the last and most degraded of four ages. The Nasadiya Sukta (Rig Veda 10.129) is remarkable for ending in explicit agnosticism: it asks who could truly know the origin, and suggests that perhaps even the highest overseer does not.

ZOROASTRIANISM

Ahura Mazda creates the world in six stages — remarkably parallel to the Abrahamic six-day account — followed by a period of festival. The cosmic struggle between Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu shapes all of history until a final renovation, the Frashokereti.

Concepts of heaven, hell, angels, demons, a final judgment, a saviour figure and bodily resurrection all appear here before the Christian era. Whether these influenced Judaism during the Babylonian exile — and through it Christianity and Islam — is a genuine and unresolved scholarly debate, complicated by the fact that the surviving Zoroastrian texts were written down much later than the beliefs they record. The influence thesis is widely held and not established.

BUDDHISM

The question is set aside rather than answered. The Buddha's response to cosmological origins is classed among the avyākata — the undeclared questions — on the grounds that pursuing them does not conduce to liberation. The Aggañña Sutta describes cycles of world-expansion and contraction and beings degenerating into materiality, but explicitly as a satirical account rather than a creation doctrine. There is no creator.

CONTEMPORARY NATURALISM

The position that the physical account is complete: that the universe requires no external explanation, that its apparent fine-tuning is either brute fact or a selection effect within a multiverse, and that meaning is constructed rather than discovered.

It deserves listing here as what it is — a metaphysical position, held for reasons, and not identical with science itself. Many working scientists hold it; many do not. The data does not decide it, which is precisely the point Chapter X made about fine-tuning and Chapter XXII about the boundary of instruments.

CHAPTER XXXII

Conclusion — Two Books, One Reality

كتابان وحقيقة واحدة

The medieval formulation was that God wrote two books — the book of scripture and the book of nature — and that they cannot finally contradict, since the author is one. That framing, common to Ibn Rushd, Maimonides and Aquinas alike, does not resolve every tension. It does set the right expectation: that apparent conflict signals a misreading of one book or the other, and that the honest response is more careful reading rather than louder assertion.

Across thirteen and a half billion years, the scientific account is one of increasing complexity emerging from simple rules — nuclei from quarks, atoms from nuclei, stars from atoms, chemistry from stars, life from chemistry, mind from life. It is a magnificent account, and it is incomplete in a specific way: it describes the trajectory without adjudicating whether the trajectory means anything. That is not a gap in the data. It is a different kind of question, and no quantity of further data will convert it into the first kind.

What scripture adds is not an alternative mechanism but a claim about standing. The khalīfah is entrusted; the one who bears the breath is addressed; and both are answerable. Whether the reader finds that claim true is beyond what any timeline can settle.

But it is worth noticing what has emerged from putting the two side by side. The faculty scripture identifies as decisive — the capacity to name, to know, to be taught, to be spoken to — is the same faculty archaeology identifies as the point where our species began to leave a record at all. Two accounts, arriving from opposite directions, with no possibility of collusion, converging on the same thing as the thing that mattered.

A CLOSING VERSE

"Are those who know equal to those who do not know?" — Qur'an 39:9. The question is rhetorical, and it is addressed to anyone who reads either book carefully.

HOW THE QUR'AN IS RENDERED ON THIS PAGE

No English rendering of the Qur'an is the Qur'an. Each is one scholar's reading, and on a handful of verses the choice of a single English word carries real theological weight. This page therefore does three things.

One. Where a term is doing work that English cannot carry, the Arabic is given — in the verse block, in transliteration, or both: ratq and fatq, dukhān, mūsiʿūn, khalīfah, ḥamaʾ masnūn, ṣalṣāl, rūḥ, aṭwār, amānah, fiṭrah, aghwaytanī. The reader is never asked to trust the English alone on a load-bearing word.

Two. Renderings are drawn principally from Sahih International and the Hilali–Khan Noble Qur'an, with Pickthall and Yusuf Ali consulted where they diverge. Where a translation is chosen over a common alternative, the choice is stated rather than made silently — as at Surah al-Aʿraf 7:16 in Chapter VI.

Three. Where the classical exegetes read a verse differently from the modern rendering, the classical reading is given, not buried. The clearest instances are al-Ṭabarī, al-Qurṭubī and Ibn Kathīr on ratq/fatq as an agricultural image (Chapter VII) and on anzalnā at 57:25 as divine bestowal rather than physical descent (Chapter IX).

Verse The Arabic term How renderings differ This page's choice, and why
7:16 aghwaytanī
أغويتني
"Sent me astray" (Hilali–Khan, Pickthall) · "led me astray" (Maududi) · "caused me to be misguided" (Ghali) · "put me in error" (Sahih Intl) · "thrown me out of the way" (Yusuf Ali) "Sent me astray." Form IV is causative, and Ibn ʿAbbas RA glossed the word as "misguided me." Iblis is assigning causation and building a grievance — a softer rendering loses the whole architecture of his defiance. Corrected from the earlier edition of this page.
2:30 khalīfah
خليفة
"Successive authority" (Sahih Intl) · "vicegerent" (Pickthall) · "generations succeeding each other" (Hilali–Khan) Left untranslated and glossed. The word carries both succession and delegated authority at once, and every English choice suppresses one of them. See Chapter XXI.
21:30 ratq / fatq
رتقاً ففتقناهما
"A joined entity, then We separated them" · "were of one piece, then We parted them" Rendered literally, with the classical agricultural reading given alongside. The concordist reading is presented as a reading, not a prediction.
51:47 mūsiʿūn
موسعون
"[Its] expander" (Sahih Intl) · "We it is Who make the vast extent" (Pickthall) · "possessing vast power" (classical) Given with both. The cosmological reading is modern; the classical reading was "possessing vast power" or "giving amply."
57:25 anzalnā
أنزلنا
"We sent down iron" — uniformly rendered this way Rendered as standard, with the caveat that the same verb is used of rain, scripture, garments (7:26) and cattle (39:6), where the sense is bestowal.
33:72 ẓalūman jahūlā
ظلوماً جهولاً
"Unjust and ignorant" · "a tyrant and a fool" (Pickthall) "Unjust and ignorant." Both are intensive forms; the verse compliments and indicts humanity in one sentence, and "fool" tips it too far toward contempt.
95:4 aḥsani taqwīm
أحسن تقويم
"Best of stature" (Sahih Intl) · "best of moulds" (Pickthall) · "best of forms" "The best of forms." Taqwīm is proportioning and setting-upright — physical and moral at once, which "stature" alone narrows.
71:14 aṭwāran
أطواراً
"In stages" · "in diverse stages" · "gradually" "In stages," with the express note that the classical commentators applied it to embryology and the human lifespan, not to phylogeny. See Chapter XVIII.
4:1 nafs wāḥidah
نفس واحدة
"One soul" · "a single person" · "a single soul" "One soul." Nafs is grammatically feminine and is not a synonym for "man"; renderings that give "a single person" import a reading the Arabic does not force. See Chapter XXIV.

Tier 1
Qur'anic text. The verse itself, in the mutawātir transmission. The highest authority available, and the only tier whose transmission is not in question. Note that interpretation of a Tier 1 text may still be contested — the text is certain, the reading may not be.
Tier 2
Sahih hadith. Narrations in al-Bukhari and Muslim, or graded sahih by the accepted critics. Binding as evidence, subject to the ordinary rules of mukhtalaf al-hadith where two sound reports appear to conflict.
Tier 3
Hasan hadith, other collections, and Biblical text. Sound but of lower grade; the four Sunan, the Musnad, and material graded hasan. Biblical passages are placed here for a specific reason: they are scripture within their own tradition and are cited on this page as such, not as independent authority in the Islamic framework.
Tier 4
Āthār and classical tafsir. Statements of Companions and Successors, and the readings of the classical exegetes. Historically weighty and indispensable for understanding how the tradition read a verse — but not prophetic speech, and not binding.
Tier 5
Isrāʾīliyyāt, weak reports, and later devotional literature. Narrated, not affirmed. Recorded here because they shaped the tradition's imagination, and labelled here because they cannot bear doctrinal weight. Includes material that is authentic in transmission but graded defective by the majority of critics — such as Sahih Muslim 2789, Chapter XI.
Science
Peer-reviewed scientific literature. Dated, measurable and revisable — that last property is a feature of the method, not a defect, and it is the reason this page declines to anchor any theological claim to a current scientific finding.

EDITORIAL NOTE
Prepared for THE CHRONICLES, in collaboration with POLYHISTORS INSTITUTE, by Ahmad Maaz Ali and Chaudhry Muhammad Rayyan Shahid. Islamic theology is the primary interpretive framework throughout; scientific and comparative material is presented on its own terms and graded separately.
Where a widely repeated claim did not survive its chain of transmission, it has been retained, graded and set aside rather than deleted — on the principle that a reader is better served by seeing the working than by being handed a tidy conclusion.
Contested matters are flagged as open. This page adjudicates nothing that the tradition itself has left undecided.
